Summary: Harry is reminded that his time with Draco is finite.

The holidays were fast approaching, and the members of Dumbledore House were no closer to learning the fate of the mermaid. No one they questioned had any knowledge of her whereabouts. Nevertheless, Harry and his friends continued their investigation. During that time, Moaning Myrtle remained conspicuously absent, leading them to suspect she knew more than she was willing to share.

When it came time for students to return home for the hols, Ron, Hermione, Seamus, Dean, Neville and Greg all packed their luggage. Harry would remain at Hogwarts, along with Draco, Pansy and Blaise.

Hermione's sharp eyes observed the longing looks shared between Neville and Pansy as Neville shouldered his bag and reluctantly exited the portrait hole. Hermione also noted how closely together Harry and Draco were standing. With a sad sigh, she picked up her own luggage and allowed Ron to carry her other bag. "Don't forget to study," Hermione admonished the others.

Ron rolled his eyes behind her back. "More importantly, find that bloody mermaid, will you?" he joked.

Pansy disappeared into her room shortly after the others left, and she refused to come out when Harry, Draco and Blaise were about to leave for dinner in the Great Hall.

"I'm not hungry," she called to Draco's summons.

Draco turned a worried frown on Harry and Blaise before nodding at Pansy's closed door and saying, "We'll bring you something to eat."

When they returned, Pansy's door was still closed.

"We can't allow her to hide away," Harry insisted. "She's been making such good progress."

Blaise stood up. "I know how to get her out." He strode to Pansy's door and knocked. "Pansy, I need your help," he said. A moment later, the door opened, and Pansy peered out. Blaise returned to his seat on the sofa and patted the cushion next to him. "Pansy, I need some advice about girls," he said.

Pansy came out and sat next to him. "It's about Ginny, isn't it?" she asked softly.

Blaise sighed dramatically. "Yes, I'm afraid I'm not accustomed to courting nice girls, and I could use your help."

Pansy grinned like an imp, and her wan features grew animated as she helped Blaise plot his courtship of Ginny.

Harry's shoulders sagged in relief, and he turned to smile at Draco. "Shall we walk?" he invited. Draco nodded, and the two of them exited the Dumbledore Common Room and strolled through the corridors.

"Are we going anywhere in particular?" asked Draco.

Harry halted and said, "This is as good a place as any." They were in the middle of a deserted hallway.

"A good place for what?" Draco questioned.

"For this," Harry replied. He rested his hands at Draco's waist and drew him close before angling his head and brushing Draco's lips with his own. Harry drew back and smiled. "I didn't want to snog you in front of your fiancee," he said.

Draco didn't have a chance to respond before Harry's mouth covered his own again. This time, however, Harry didn't settle for a chaste peck on the lips. Instead, he deepened the kiss, sliding his hands up Draco's back to pull him closer. Draco opened his mouth to the pressure, welcoming the thrust of Harry's tongue. Pleasure sparked along his nerves and over his skin, leaving Draco trembling with want and need. Harry had never pushed for more than heavy snogging and some groping, but Draco knew that if Harry asked for more this evening, he would willingly surrender.

The four of them made a trip to Hogsmeade the following day. Blaise dragged Pansy off to help him select a gift for Ginny, leaving Harry and Draco to strike out on their own. Harry bought presents for Ron and Hermione, and some smaller items for the rest of the Weasley clan. Draco picked up some gifts, as well, then hesitated outside the door of Beads & Baubles. "Harry, I need to buy a gift for Pansy," he said, eyes on the ground.

"That's great," said Harry. "I was planning to get her something, too."

Draco looked up, expression stricken. "You don't understand," he mumbled. "I need to buy her something appropriate."

"Appropriate?"

Draco nodded. "Something appropriate for a...a fiancee."

Harry's stomach dropped. Striving to appear unconcerned, he said, "Oh, yes. I'll just, ah, I'll leave you to it while I look for something in Honeydukes for Pansy." Harry turned and walked away before Draco could read the disappointment in his eyes. Harry knew that Draco would marry Pansy once they left Hogwarts, but he had naively allowed himself to think that he and Draco could share something special until that time. It was jarring to be so forcibly reminded that he had no real future with Draco.

Firming his resolve, Harry strode on his own to Honeydukes to select something nice for Pansy. After all, she was his friend, too.

"Hurry up, Pansy!" called Blaise. "It's time to open gifts!"

It was Christmas morning, and Blaise, Harry and Draco were waiting impatiently in the Common Room for Pansy to emerge from her dorm room.

"Just let me get dressed!" she hollered back.

"No!" cried Harry. "Pyjamas only this morning! We agreed."

Pansy's door opened, and she tromped out wearing a green velvet dressing gown and Puffskein slippers on her feet. "Fine, fine," she sighed, joining her Housemates by their small Christmas tree. They each had gifts from one another to open, along with some presents that had been sent from their absent Housemates.

Harry tamped down his jealousy as Draco handed Pansy the gift he'd bought her. Pansy opened it to reveal a gold and emerald bracelet. "Draco, it's beautiful!" she gasped, throwing her arms around him and giving him a kiss on the cheek.

Draco cast a guilty glance at Harry as he accepted Pansy's thanks. Pansy bestowed kisses on Harry and Blaise, too, for the gifts they gave her, and Harry found himself relaxing once more. Draco thanked Harry shyly for the beautiful quill set he had purchased for Draco at Scrivenshaft's, and then he stood and said, "Let me get you your gift, Harry." He dashed into the room Blaise shared with Neville and returned with a suspiciously familiar-looking item.

Harry gulped. He was fairly certain he knew what it was, and he accepted the gift from Draco with trembling hands. He tore the wrappings away to reveal a cage, which housed a small, fluffy gray owl. "Draco," he gasped. "I-"

"It's not a snowy owl," Draco babbled. "I wanted you to have another, but I knew nothing could replace Hedwig. He's still a baby, and he'll need to be trained, and-"

"Draco, I love him," exclaimed Harry. "Thank you."

Draco beamed, and Harry smiled back. They could make this work. They had to. He would find a way.
