The first weekend of January has arrived! This month's prompt is "Cheers!" Feel free to combine it with other prompts if you wish. I know some community prompts will work with it. *nudges* Please post your entry in your own journal (unlocked!), or a community of your choice, and leave me a link in comments below. Longer fics and artwork are always welcome, as are drabbles and poetry. You have until Sunday, January 17, at 11:00pm CST to submit an entry. Summary: Harry rings in the New Year by reflecting on the past.
Disclaimer: Characters are the property of JK Rowling, et al.
Harry turned from gazing out over the Thames to look at Draco. His boyfriend was wearing one of the ridiculous Happy New Year party hats that Harry had insisted they wear for the occasion, and Draco had been a good sport about it. Harry recalled their first glance, when they had been mere boys of eleven. The arrogant pureblood had sneered at him, and Harry had spent the next seven years in a battle of sorts with Draco. He gave a slight shake of his head when he thought of all the time they had wasted.
Harry reached over and grasped Draco's hand, smiling when his boyfriend laced their fingers together. He remembered their first touch, or at least the first one that wasn't pugilistic in nature. After the war, Harry had returned Draco's wand to him, and they had shaken hands and agreed to put the past behind them. It was the first time Harry had looked upon Draco as something other than a foe, and a spark of awareness had sizzled along his nerves.
Harry was distracted when the sound of other revelers nearby tooting horns and twirling noisemakers as they counted down the seconds to the new year carried to them on the balcony of their hotel room.
"...four, three, two, ONE! Happy New Year!"
Harry leaned forward and captured Draco's lips in a delightfully thorough snog as fireworks exploded into brilliant colors over the Thames. He would never forget their first kiss. It had been nothing like the gentle peck on the lips he'd shared with Ginny. Instead, Harry and Draco had met in a fiery, passionate kiss that had put Harry in mind of the fireworks that were lighting up the sky tonight.
Harry raised his head and smiled at Draco's dazed expression. "Happy New Year, love," he said, and he meant it. Draco had been his first love, his only love, and Harry made a resolution to himself then and there to make their relationship more permanent in the coming year. For now, however, they would celebrate the new year along with the rest of London. Harry poured two flutes of champagne and raised his glass.
"To the New Year," Draco toasted.
"To us," Harry added, clinking his glass to Draco's. "Cheers!"
