Waterstone's are running a writing competition - they have story cards, about twice the size of a standard postcard, and the idea is to fill one of those with a short story, and send it in. The prizes are kinda cool, but it's a national competition so no one could really even hope to win. Anyway, this idea popped into my head last night, as I was supposed to be going to sleep. I think it might be too long (279 words?), but this is the only idea I've had so far. I like it. I like the concept, but I'm not sure about some the ideas I've picked in the execution of it.
Any comments or suggestions would be welcome, of course.
I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking ‘oh, a nice piece of trashy romance, just the thing for a singleton to read during her annual week in the sun’. Female author, snappy title, pretty cover - heavens, is that even a touch of pink? You don’t need to read my blurb to know what I’m about.
Oh yes, cheesy cliché, you think. By now, I hardly need to tell you you’re wrong. Would a trashy romance novel have this attitude? I don’t think so.
No, my dear, you are sadly mistaken. Sadly, I say, because trashy romance is all well and good in its place. For a week in the sun, say, and to be left in a hotel room at the end. I am not the type of book to be left in a hotel room. (No false modesty here, either).
My dear, I am gripping. A thriller? Oh no. That’s not my style. No blood, either, no violence. But a hint of mystery, I would say, and yes, maybe, even a hint of that dreaded romance. Fantasy, that’s what I am, so rare a genre for women’s fiction - but undeniably a female book, all the same. Oh yes, books have genders. You hadn’t realised? Well, I’ll try not to be offended.
Of course, you’re sadly ignorant of these matters. Look at you. You pick me up, glance at my title, run your fingers down my spine - do you think you can get to know me so easily? My dear, you’re wrong. And before you put me down and walk away from my shelf, I have one piece of advice for you - never judge a book by her cover.
