Since I was nudged...

So not a lot has been happening, or at least nothing has been happening that I wanted to post about, hence my lack of updated entries. But I'll give you the skinny.

I went to the interview at the medical benefits company, thought it went well, but received a letter a week later stating that they were seeking more qualified candidates. Ok, understandable.

I went to an interview today at a charter school in downtown Dallas to be an associate English teacher for grades 7, 8, and 9. Basically, the associate part is a test run to see if they like you, and vice versa. I took the train in to downtown and it was very convenient because I didn't have to deal with downtown parking. My major pet peeve. I can't parallel park to save my life.

I felt like such a poser. I was wearing my nice pin-striped suit and carrying a mock briefcase with my resume and references. While I was walking toward the train platform, an older guy caught up with me and told me how professional I looked. When I told him I had a job interview, he told me that I had the job for sure. I said, "I hope so." He said, "NO! None of this 'I hope so' bidness, you have to go in there thinking 'I got this job!'" And people kept talking to me on the train like I was important or something. Maybe they thought I was a lawyer and ready to sue. I don't know. It was interesting.

I wish I could do a formal social experiment. When I got on a connector rail to my final destination, a black, elderly gentlemen stood up so I could have his seat. I said, "No, no, please, sit down, I can stand." But he shook his head and moved toward the door. Okay. So I sat down and the guy next to me gave me an earful about being black and white and giving up their seats. I'm not quite sure what he was saying because his voice was low, I was nervous about the interview, and I wasn't going to lean my head in to hear him because he smelled. I thought he was totally going to go into a Rose Parks speech or something. He told me I should always smile like that because it looks good on me. And then he said he wanted to make me laugh so I would smile again. Oh, good lord. Just please let me off the train!!

So I get to my destination and walk the few blocks to where the school is located. I went through the interview, smiled, laughed, attempted to look like a well-adjusted, good citizen. I think it went really well, but what the fuck do I know? She seemed interested in my background experience and told me all about their school and what I would be doing, etc. She even discussed the parking. That's a good sign, right?

So she said she would contact me either tomorrow or Wednesday. I'll let you know either way! I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
