a few weeks ago jimmie kennen and i were walking into walmart, (I know), when we happened across a pickup truck with a rediculous sign tied to it's bed, it read : "if you are illegal, get out of weymouth." Outraged we grabbed a sharpie and scribbled out the word illegal, and replaced it with racist. The man called the police when he found his car. About an hour later as we departed from the parking lot we were stopped by police, who made it clear that they were just fufilling their obligatory duties in filing a report, but would not press charges on account of the fact they realized we were young and vivacious and the man was old and indeed a racist prick, in short, they agreed with us. one officer even went so far as to call the sign stupid and admit his parents were german. so there. we'd won.
kind of.
today he's standing at the intersection near my house with a big vibrant sign that reads, "I did not serve in two wars to be invaded by ILLEGALS." and you know what, he's right. He didnt. (i'm not sure where he's living that he feels hes being invaded.) But he did serve in two wars to preserve basic human rights and whatever you want to believe the american dream is. He served to keep a long tradition of immigration and cultural reinvention going. I want to stand out next to him with a big sign that says "WHERE ARE YOUR GRANDPARENTS FROM?"
his anger baffles and disgusts me. Theres a group in the southwest that rallies to get a multi million dollar wall built from mexico all the way over to the gulf. It's goal would be to stop any south american person from attempting to enter this country illegally. It's supposed purpose would be deemed 'border control'. but, here is what gets me;
after septmeber 11 people went NUTS over illegal immigrants, namely those of southamerican origin. this continued even though all known terrorists affilliated with the attacks had entered the united states through CANADA. to this day there are rivers, just a few hundred miles north of us, that can be easily crossed via canoe, or row boat and allow any person safe passage between countries. And yet, people still get all hot and bothered about the mexicans.
It's not fear of terrorism thats got this man all worked up, its fear of poor brown people. People fleeing horrible conditions in the search of promise. people who choose to come here, who overcome all odds to set foot on this soil, to live in crowded apartments with no healthcare, working without pensionand struggling to assimilate. They are human beings. They are pressing their noses against pane glass and panting at delights they cannot touch or taste.
Where are the people advocating for their rights? Where is the organization drawing up plans for humanitarian aid, maybe attemtping to make it easier and cheaper for them to obtain visas?
I want to kick that mans teeth in.
