Carlie woke up suddenly as a wave of discomfort washed over her. Sitting upright she began to rub her eyes and look around the unfamiliar room. Letting out a heavy sigh she remembered where she was and instantly felt home sick. Swinging her legs over the side of the bed she brought her hands up to her face as a flashback began to play in her head.

“We’ve got a new job Carlie; you have to understand that these types of opportunities don’t come often. Germany is an amazing place and we have taught you enough for you to be able to understand what’s happening. Also your grandparents live there, it has been ages since you have seen them and they always had to come here to visit you. Don’t you think it is about time you give that back to them?” her mother began as Carlie resented the fact that they were moving to the other side of the world.

“But Mum, my friends are here, my life is here, I have spent seventeen years here and now you are dragging me miles away from this. I don’t want to go! Why can’t I just stay here? I am almost old enough to live by myself, please!” she begged her mother.

“I’m sorry Carlie but I am not leaving you here on your own and we need you to look after your brother.”

“Can’t Nonna and Poppy do that?”

“No Carlie, you are coming with us and that is final,” her father said as he walked into the living room.

“But Dad…”

“... No buts young lady, now go up to your room and start packing.”

“I HATE YOU!” she screamed as she angrily made her way up the stairs and into her room as she slammed the door behind her. She leant up against it as she tried to calm her breathing.

She was brought out of her thoughts by a slight knock on her door. “Uh… yeah… come in,” she mumbled. The door slightly opened and her mother’s head peaked in.

“Hi sweetie, I’m just making sure you are up, you don’t won’t to be late for your first day at school, do you?” her mother smiled to her.

“Oh… school, yeah I’m up, thanks Mum,” she grumbled towards her mother before hoping off her bed and making her way to her closet to pick out an outfit. After going through basically her whole wardrobe she finally settled on a basic white singlet top, a blue plaid shirt with black skinny jeans and black lace up boots. After grabbing her clothes she made her way to the bathroom for a quick shower and then got dressed for the day ahead.

Once she was showered and dressed, she made her way out of the bathroom and down the stairs to her new and completely different household. She sighed loudly as she made her way into the kitchen and let out a small smile towards her brother sitting at the kitchen bench.

“Hey Alex, excited for today?” she asked as she ruffled his hair.

“Oi! Hands of the hair will you and no not really, this is stupid, why did we even have to move here? I prefer talking in English not German, damn parents,” he replied while straightening his hair again.

“I’m with you on that one, I had an argument with them the night we had to pack, I wanted to stay but seeing as you’re only fifteen they need someone to look after you. I swear you are sensible for a fifteen year old, you aren’t that stupid to do something idiotic,” Carlie said as she slumped down onto the chair next to her brother.

“Exactly, or I could have stayed with you back home, would you have let me?” he asked with eager eyes.

“I would have even though you can get annoying, I quite like having you around,” she smiled towards him.

“Morning kids,” their father spoke as he walked into the kitchen.

“Morning Dad,” they both replied in unison.

“Are you excited for school?” he asked them in a cheerful voice.

“Nope, I will never be ready for school, but cheers for asking,” Alex replied before returning to his breakfast.

“Well same for me, but I will give it a go,” Carlie responded before letting out a small giggle towards her brother.

----

Once they had finished breakfast they made their way out towards their father’s car, saying goodbye to their mother on the way and got into it. Carlie let her brother have the front seat because he would always fight her for it and she didn’t feel like fighting that morning so she just let him have it. Making sure everyone was buckled in; her father turned on the car and began driving out of the drive way making sure that it was safe. The car was rather silent as their father drove them to school, the occasional question from their dad would only get a quick reply before it went quiet again.

Finally arriving at the school their dad stopped outside the entrance and said goodbye as they jumped out of the car. They waved goodbye to him before both sighing at the same time as they slowly made their way inside the gates. The first thing they noticed was the big stack of books in front of the entrance to the building, they both looked at each other in confusion before Carlie shrugged.

“This school must love books or something,” Alex shrugged also before continuing to walk inside.

“Probably,” Carlie smiled as she followed her brother inside. As they got closer to the entrance she noticed a bunch of people laughing out of the corner of her eye, she turned her head and instantly was drawn to this cute dark-haired girl, she smiled to herself before her brother tapped her on the shoulder.

“Are you coming or not?” he asked with a puzzled look.

“Oh yeah, sorry,” she said sheepishly before heading inside the building.

The pair of them were instantly flooded with German speaking kids, they were actually happy their parents taught them German for pretty much their whole life, but being around this many German speaking people was kind of overwhelming and different. They looked at the sign above them and made their way to the main office to get their enrolment completed and their timetable for the year. Arriving at the front desk they were greeted by a bubbly lady.

“Hello, how may I help the two of you?” she smiled.

“Uh…hello I’m Carlie Rose and this is my brother, Alexander Rose. We are here to complete our enrolment,” Carlie quickly responded as she became nervous as she never had to speak German officially to anyone.

“Ahh, yes, I was expecting the two of you, okay, just sign this here and I will go get your timetables and a map for you to find your classes, oh, and your locker number,” she once again smiled before turning away and heading for the filing cabinet.

They both signed the papers where they were supposed to sign and then handed it back to the lady at the desk before taking the pieces of papers from her and walking away. “What’s your first class?” Carlie asked looking towards her brother.

“Uh… History… what about you?”

“I have Math, great just the subject I wanted, first thing in the morning and on the first day here,” Carlie sarcastically said as she rolled her eyes.

“Aw, come on now Carlie, it won’t be that bad, I have bloody History, now that’s shit,” he said in fake annoyance.

“Yeah, okay, sure Alex, alright, well I will see you after then?” she said as the bell for first period rung.

“Yeah sure, have fun now,” he smirked before looking at his map and heading in the direction of his first class.

“I will,” Carlie smiled as she began to walk in the other direction. She looked down at her own map trying to figure out where she was going. As she was reading her map and walking she accidently bumped into someone, causing the person to drop their books and for Carlie to drop her pieces of paper.

“Hey watch it,” the other person said in German as Carlie began to bend down to pick up the books.

“I’m really sorry, I…” Carlie started to say as she stood back up and was greeted by two gorgeous blue eyes. “I… should… um… really watch where I am going, but to be honest I have no idea where I actually have to go,” she finally completed her sentence in English as she shook her head.

“Oh, don’t worry about it, you must be new here, I haven’t seen you around. Hi, I’m Luzi and you are?” The other girl said in English as well as she smiled while taking her books from Carlie in her left hand and held out her right.

“Yes I’m new and hi, I’m Carlie,” she smiled as she took the other girls hand and shook it.

“Nice to meet you Carlie, now what class do you have, I may be able to help you.”

“I have um…Math,” she awkwardly replied.

“Oh you’re in my class then, just follow me,” she smiled once again before turning around and walking away. Carlie just stood there slightly embarrassed as she watched the other girl start to leave. She saw her suddenly stop and turn back around, “Well are you coming or what?” she asked slightly confused.

“Oh right, yes sorry,” Carlie mumbled before she began to follow the other girl to class. As they reached the class she heard Luzi tell her this was it and that she should just find a seat to sit. As they walked into the class every head turned towards them and they just stared at Carlie like she was an alien, this made her feel incredibly uncomfortable. She watched Luzi head to the other side of the room and sit down next to the group of people she was with this morning. She then looked around looking for a seat and noticed one at the back of the room which had no one sitting there. Silently making her way to that seat she tried not to look at the people who were still staring at her, finally sitting down she pulled out her note pad and pen and looked up to see some people still staring at her.

Finally the teacher had arrived and the gaze of the people had left her and made their way to the teacher. “Good morning class, sorry I’m late, please take out your text books and we will get started,” she said as she looked up and saw Carlie. “Oh, I believe we have a new student in the class. Hi I’m Bea Vogel, I teach Math and Music, please would you stand and introduce yourself,” she said towards her, instantly Carlie felt her face heat up and she knew she was turning red.

“Uh… Hi, I’m Carlie Rose and I just moved here from Australia,” she quickly said in German as everyone’s gaze was on her again.

“Well, welcome to the Pestalozzi, Carlie,” Bea smiled as she made her way around to the board.

Carlie sat back down and sighed in relief as the students turned their attention back to the front of the class. Carlie didn’t pay much attention to the class as she never really liked math, her attention mainly strayed towards Luzi and her friends. She instantly felt attracted to this girl and she had no idea why because back home Carlie had only had one girlfriend and they lasted for about three years. When they broke up she was completely heartbroken and told herself that she would never find anyone better than the girl she was with. Coming out to her parents was rather easy and they took it quite well, at first of course they were shocked but they told her they would continue to love and support her no matter who she loved.

The bell had begun to ring indicating the end of the lesson; she quietly and quickly packed her stuff into her bag and began to get up as she heard a voice come from beside her.

“So how was your first lesson?” Luzi smiled.

“Oh, not bad really, I didn’t actually pay much attention, not a big fan of Math,” she smiled back and was slightly surprised that the girl came to ask her about her first lesson.

“Oh yeah, me either, it is quite boring but Bea, she is alright most of the time, she is always late though, so you don’t really have to get to class on time, so that is a bonus. What’s your favourite subject then?” Luzi slightly laughed.

“I’m into music, but there doesn’t seem to be a class even though Ms Vogel said she teaches music,” Carlie said slightly puzzled.

“Ah, yeah, no, she assists with our school band, the STAG, they are pretty good, well I should know, I’m a part of it. Do you sing? If so, you should come try out we are always looking for new members, isn’t that right Emma,” Luzi said as she yelled over to her friend.

“Is what right?” Emma asked, quietly making her way over.

“That we are looking for new members to join STAG, I mean me, you, Jenny, Sophie, Hotte and Timo are great but we could use the help of new talent.”

“Yes, it’s true, you should try out,” Emma smiled to the girl. “Oh, I am Emma, but you already know that since she just said my name, and this is my girlfriend Jenny,” she said grabbing Jenny’s hand as she pulled her towards her.

“Hello,” Jenny smiled as she gave Emma a quick kiss on the cheek.

“Nice to meet both of you, I’m Carlie,” she smiled at the girls’ interaction.

“Hello Carlie, I am Hotte, it is a pleasure to meet you,” the boy said as he walked over and wriggled his eyebrows behind his glasses.

“Pleasure to meet you too Hotte,” Carlie smiled.

“So are you going to try out?” he asked eagerly.

“Um, yeah sure why not,” she smiled towards him and slightly laughed as she saw the boy get excited.

“Hotte, this doesn’t mean you can hit on her,” Luzi also laughed at his behaviour.

“Hey, that’s not what I had in mind!” Hotte said in his own defence.

“Sure Hotte, we know how you treated Jenny when she first got here last year,” Luzi rolled her eyes.

“I’m not that bad,” he said with a pout.

“Yeah, okay Hotte,” Luzi once again smiled before turning her attention to Carlie. “Alright, you can come and try out this Wednesday afternoon if you would like to,” she smiled.

“Sure, I would love to but I think I should be getting to my next class,” Carlie said as she began to walk out of the room.

“Hey wait,” Luzi called after her. “What class do you have?”

Carlie looked down at timetable, “I have art,” she said looking back up.

“Oh great me too, the rest of them have History, have fun with Gotting guys,” Luzi smiled as she made her way over to Carlie. “Pass me your timetable. I want to see if we have the same lessons,” she said as she grabbed the paper from Carlie’s hand. “Oh cool, we do, well hey at least you have one friend in each of your classes right?” she smiled once again as she began walking towards the art classroom. ‘Friend… she thinks of me as her friend,’ Carlie thought as she smiled to herself and then followed the girl to the room.

The rest of the day went by rather fast as she now had people to talk to which distracted her from knowing what the time was. She saw her brother every now and then in the halls and smiled to herself as she saw him with a bunch of people, she was extremely happy that he too had found some friends to hang out with. Making her way outside, she met up with her brother and smirked towards him. “So how was your first day,” she asked, reverting back to English, as they began walking outside the entrance gates.

“Not bad, met a few guys to hang out with, at least I’m not a loner and I also see you have made friends,” he smiled to her.

“Yeah, they are pretty cool, they are in this school band, choir thing and they asked if I wanted to join.”

“You said yes of course, because I believe you are a brilliant singer.”

“Of course I did, I love singing, you know that and playing the piano but I am not sure if we can play instruments,” she said with a smile and then shrugged.

“You get your talents from Mum,” he replied.

“You can also play the Piano Alex, I have heard you, not so much singing because you won’t open your mouth, but I think you would be a good singer.”

“Yeah, I can play it, not as good as you though and no I don’t want to sing, I will be shit and I know it,” he said with a serious tone.

“Yeah, whatever you say Alex,” Carlie said as she made her way over to her father’s car.

“Hey Dad,” Alex said getting into the car.

“Hey Dad,” Carlie also said.

“Hello you two, so how was your first day?” he smiled to them.

“Yeah, not bad, met a few dudes to hang out with,” Alex responded happily.

“Same, I have met a bunch of people myself, it wasn’t all that bad,” Carlie said with a smile.

“See, this change wasn’t as bad as you thought,” their father said as he drove off. “Oh, also you will have to find your own way to school from now on, I start my job at the hospital tomorrow, so I will be quite busy.”

“No worries Dad, pretty sure there is a bus that stops around the corner from us,” Alex replied before turning back towards Carlie with a raised eyebrow.

“Yeah I think there is,” she shrugged.

“Alright, good.”
The rest of the car ride home they took turns telling their father about their first day at school and what it was like and before they knew it they were pulling into the driveway. Happily jumping out of the car, Alex ran into the house and dropped his bag by the door. Carlie followed him and made her way up the stairs and towards her room; she flopped down onto her bed once she was in the room and let out a sigh of relief and then a smile. ‘Luzi is something special,’ she thought before she heard her dad yell out to her brother to take his bag to his room. ‘Maybe this was just the perfect change I need,’ she thought once more as she closed her eyes.
