Castle Ficlet: To Heart

A/N: Just an idea I had while watching the ep.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Castle’s request for Kate to take care of Alexis if anything ever happened to him was supposed to be just a joke - silliness in the wake of a stupid curse. She never expected that, one day so soon, she would be standing outside Castle’s apartment door, breaking the horrible news to his daughter that he wouldn’t be coming home.
But Kate took his inane appeal to heart, and kept her promise. Alexis was her first and last call of every day; checking to make sure she was okay, headed to school, and doing her homework. If she needed any help with anything, Kate would drop what she was doing without a second thought. It never occurred to her why she was taking on the responsibility with such zeal, until Alexis openly asked her when it was that she’d fallen in love with her dad.
Kate had been taken aback by the question, and had used every word in her vocabulary to try to refute it. “There’s no denying it, Kate,” Alexis finally told her. “No matter how much you guys argued, I know you loved him, just like he loved you.”
Hearing the words she didn’t even know she’d needed to hear made Kate break down in a way she hadn’t allowed herself to in the month since Castle’s death. Suddenly, she was sobbing; being held in Alexis’s arms until she was able to nod and confess, “I did. I loved him, too.”
