18.9 - I haven't posted the daily bike milage for a while but this one's notable because it's a lot bigger than the usual 5 I run up going to and from work. It's also notable because the extra miles weren't run up before or after the regular commute.

An image of firemen I had was shot down today. That image is of the alarm going off in the station and the crew getting into their boots, slickers, hats and whatever else. There was a trash fire on a loading dock at work today and at least one of the guys arrived in a tshirt and jeans. When he discovered there was some actual work to be done, he had to trot back to the engine and get dressed. His crew arrived in two engines, and they were soon followed by two cars worth of management. A third engine showed up, and it apparently got the message "building in back" instead of "in back of building", because it drove down our side street, past all the workers standing out in the parking lot. When it got to the end, instead of turning right where more employees were hanging about, and where the other FD vehicles were parked, it turned left so that they could look for a fire in another building.

When the alarm goes off, I've learned to take my bike out with me. With it, I hung out in the parking lot, took a ride down to the Nahant rotary where KK's mother's house was being torn down, and hung out some more.

Then I headed south, past the casino boat where day shift employees were just showing up, past the school bus yard. There, I ducked under a gate and found myself on an unused, paved road that took me between the bulkhead and the power lines down to the street between Building 19 and Walmart where there was anoother gate to duck under. This route, with a little sidewalk riding, offers a bike route all the way to Point of Pines with minimal milage on the Lynnway.

I was hoping someone would send out for lunch, but nobody did, so I decided to use my new route to get lunch from Kelly's. This time, I passed a gentleman on the roadway that could have opened Monty Python's Flying Circus, if he'd been fatter and been wearing more clothes.

That's why the extra miles.
