Quick Question

I have a British term I wonder if I'm interpreting correctly so I'm going to ask: When a character says someone is "fit" do they mean in the "works out at the gym" type of fitness, or do they mean the Americanism "That guy is really hot" comment? I think it is the latter, but am not certain.

Attractive. I mean it can mean 'healthy' but that's a whole other tone of voice comment! Basically it means attractive!

Thank you! I was interpreting it the wrong way for a long time, and then started to wonder when it was being used about a couple of different characters in stories who definitely didn't fit the go to the gym model.

I once made a semi-accidental pun by trying to say 'aesthetically pleasing' and instead saying 'athletically pleasing' as a way of saying 'fit'.

Definitely the latter.

I was thinking "works out AND pretty" when I first read it being applied to Arthur, but then I kept reading and realized there had to be a different application of the term. Thanks!

Well he definitely does fit both meanings of the word 'fit'. ;)

He does - I was happy to see that Bradley actually had some acne problems as a 20-something, because he's ridiculously GQ gorgeous.

This made me think of something else about the way Merlin and Arthur are written: Frequently, poor Merlin is described as being clumsy (which I have seen, just not that much in the series, as I've been catching episodes) and kind of super skinny and almost er, ethereal (all those cheekbones). But I've been looking at photos and film of Colin Morgan, and he's a tall, well-built guy, who obviously is in extremely good shape. Not someone a strong wind would blow over. I don't get it. Merlin is hardly the blushing, retiring sort either, a characterization that always makes me go "huh?" The other thing is kind of makes me scratch my head is fandom's take on Arthur's relationship with his father. I don't think he and Uther actually get on all that horribly on the series.
Doesn't he actually tell Arthur he's proud of him at one point?
