Why yes, I bitch a lot about stuff, get over it

Sep 14, 2013 09:44

I'm know I'm not in a good mood these days, but anyway, I've been snatching time to read fic. I've been combing through big bang archives of late, as well as reading fics posted in the annual Big Bangs going. It could be any fandom, because this happens to me every time I read my way through BB/fest postings ( Read more... )

complaining a lot; bitching;

I have warm fuzzies for this post. And I'm saying that as one who recently read 3 books about the Titanic for research on steamships of that era - for a story. You can breath easy. Very little actually made it into the story itself.

As far as the Titanic goes the true story is far far more interesting and heartbreaking than movie.

Oh, and I read the books because I couldn't bring myself to watch Jack and Rose again. I'm in complete agreement with you on the whole freeze and die thing.

Ohmygod, that movie...like they had to cook up a stupid fake love story to make Titanic interesting in the first place. Cameron's dives to the real wreck and the true story are so fascinating, why the heck they had to make this melodrama is...ridiculous, but it made obscene amounts of money, so there you are.

*laughs* This! *points up*

I've not managed to bring myself to read any big bang fics yet, as I am trying to avoid the distraction until I finish writing my own, but I have been following the postings and bookmarking the ones I want to read later. There are a mighty few that made it past the face scrunching, eyerolling, OMFGNOing, to my bookmark list. And most of the ones that didn't fell into variations of a,b and c above.

Thank you btw - for the last paragraph - I almost considered sticking it on the list, didn't cause there were things that bothered me about the summary but then was rethinking because I have so few to read. I'm glad my initial gut reaction was correct.

I was combing through stories, because I don't have a lot of time these days and, because, like you, I have things I just wanted to avoid at all costs. There weren't many that made the cut for me either. The one with the warehouse and the drug trials- you can skip it right on by. There's no super squicks, but jeepers, NOTHING HAPPENS. "Live me with me I love you." "I don't want to...I'm...OK fine." The End. Sigh.

Happily, there are also good fics that have posted - several that are just amazing/lovely. And then I look at some of the other stuff and just wonder about people big time :). I'm lucky I have the recs you gave me back when I first got into the fandom. I know anything you recommend is going to be good.

AND I am so looking forward to reading your story!!!!

I think of the like almost 200 stories that were getting posted, I bookmarked like 20. LOL. I'm getting even pickier as I get older and these pairings for the shock value, or because hey there's absolutely not even the slightest hint of there being something between character 'a' and 'b' on the show, why not shove them together?! have me running for the hills. As well as the usual stories that have me running like rape, and non-con, and more rape. Ick ( ... )

LOL - I had my arm twisted to see 'Titanic' and I heartily loathed it. Like you, I sat there wishing the ruddy thing would hurry up and sink already. But then, my dad and I giggled hysterically all the way through 'Love Story', so maybe it's me *g*

We went to see Titanic when it came out and sadly, I talked Annie into going because I was the big Titanic buff - I belonged to the historical society for 10 years, but all my reading was strictly nonfiction. Then we saw this crap-fest in a theater that was 90 degrees inside because teh A/C wasn't working AND a bunch of teens who thought Jack and Rose were the Best Thing EVAR. Oh god. It's on my list of the top 20 worst money-making films ever. The real story of the Titanic is a Big Story. But Hollywood is crap and they always want to muck things up with fake love stories and hokey bits about doomed romance.

LOL, oh, yeah, agree about The Titanic especially as it was Jack who died when I was so utterly sick of Rose! And that steamed up car sequence ... so trite. The special effects were pretty good and I like the song a lot, so long as I forget where it came from ... ;)

As a writer, though, I must admit that I worry about being repetitive and being trite and being boring because it really all has been said what feels like an innumerable number of times, at least in the fandoms I write in. And yeah, those 'paste the name on' generic characters who bear no resemblance to the guys I saw in x series annoy me a LOT. I see them as practice writing for original fic and I feel as if they hijacked the characters and my attention to engage me in a story that really has nothing to do with the series.
