The amount of cruelty and hatred in the world continues to sicken me.
Edit: I got so grumpy that I wrote a letter.
Dear Board of Supervisors, Sonoma County, CA
Please let me introduce myself. My name **** ****** and I am emailing you from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
News of an incident that occurred in your County has reached me and I felt compelled to email you, the Board, to see if a) you were aware of it and b) if there was anything you could do.
I am sure you have heard of Clay Greene’s story, an elderly gentleman who lost not only his partner of 20 years but all his worldly possessions because of cruelty and discrimination. It is safe to say that I was disgusted and appalled when I read the news. How people could find such hatred in their hearts to separate a loving couple and then strip them of their belongings and respect is beyond me.
After hearing of Mr. Greene’s story I began to think, what kind of place must they have lived in to have their rights taken away. Surely not a County in the state of California. Definitely not in the United States of America, where human rights are legally protected by the Constitution of the United States. Does it not state in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness?
Were Clay and Harold given the rights of Life, Liberty and Happiness? I think not. In fact, the word unalienable means ‘not to be separated, given away, or taken away’. Clay and Harold were separated, their house and belongings were sold and given away, and their rights as citizens of the United States were taken away. I ask you, dear Supervisors, how could something this horrible happen in a country where the Pledge of Allegiance clearly states that liberty and justice is available for all?
I trust that Clay Greene’s story will be heard and justice will be found. I also trust that the Board of Supervisors will not only show support but stop something like this from happening ever again.
