in some ways RPS feels homophobic. it's like gay athletes are only acceptable in our own little fictitious worlds. we laugh it off as obviously not being real, like of course none of them would really sleep with other guys. and i want to laugh when disclaimers use RL marriages as proof that it's not real. considering that anonymous gay football/soccer players have admitted to their wives being forced on them by their clubs, that's not such a solid defense.

i wonder if the sexual orientation of an RPS writer is a factor in how they deal with the concept. i might be taking this too seriously because i am queer and i'm sensitive to the possibility that people might not be taking my orientation, even if it is in relation to other people, seriously. but a straight writer might just say, "hey, this is hot. where can i find more?" because they don't have as much invested in it all. and i know i'm generalizing, but it's hard to know how it really does work out.

I think athletes are more worried about how the media and many fans ( ... )

I think some people who write RPS are homophobic, and it just seems weird.

Yes it's unfair to interpret one action as a basis for an entire relationship, which is why I view RPS like tabloid-writing. Unfortunately for these athletes they are public figures, so moments like the xabi and steven gerrard kiss are going to be captured on camara and commented on. The same kind of treatment is given to actors and musicians. I think RPS of actors and musicians may be bigger than RPS on athletes (I'm not sure because I don't read fics in those genres). I really don't know the scene too well in either of these areas, but there are an increasing number of movies with gay or lesbian characters... Sorry I forgot why I brought that up...

i've always had the same theory as you, that it's attraction-based, but the negligence of femmeslash feels somewhat anti-feminist.I think there is some truth in that. It's really hard to pinpoint the reasons and causes, but it just doesn't seem fair. It's like females aren't naturally as hot as males or ( ... )

also, it bothers me that no one ever acknowledges that athletes might have gay relationships outside of their sport, and that having sex with teammates probably isn't the best thing in the world.

That's a good point. It's not like their teammates are their best friends or even friends with them at all. Many straight athletes have girlfriends/boyfriends/husbands/wives who don't play their sport and many gay athletes are the same. Though I think RPS writers write teammate slash because they find it easier and may have more "material" to work with.

Yeah, there are definitely too many happy fics where everyone in the lockerroom is accepting of the relationship but I think many writers use it as an easy-way out so they don't have to deal with tough issues.
