dear yule goat

Dear Yuletide Writer:

Hello! Thank you for the story you're about to write me. I'm extremely fond of all of the things that I've asked for and if you've offered them, you probably are too and that makes me very happy, because I like when people like the things that I like.

Before getting to the fandoms themselves, I always think it's good to cover general likes and dislikes so that no one gets any terrible surprises later on.

Things I like include: friends to lovers, porn, reluctant allies, hurt/comfort, emotional codependence, baby/kid fic, character development, banter, road trips, "oh no, [they're] hot," fake dating, casual touching, all touching, intimacy of all kinds. There are probably more, but that is a relatively representative list.

Things I don't like include: non-con, character bashing. That's pretty much it. I don't ask for characters I don't like and if you make it really obvious you don't care for them, I'm probably not going to like whatever else it is you write.

Now, as for the fandoms themselves, I tried to give at least a couple sentences on each of them on my sign up. But, uh, I have more to say about almost all of them. And explanatory quotes. Or gifs. Or just me rambling, there's going to be a lot of that. I hope that it's helpful.

Request #1

Fandom: The Hidden Legacy Series - Ilona Andrews
Character(s): Nevada Baylor, Connor "Mad" Rogan
Request: Sex. That's it. That's all I want. For more, please see my letter.

Okay, so that's not ALL I want, but it's definitely first on my list. I'm actually not hugely into the sex part of the relationships in works by Ilona Andrews (they're just not that good at writing sex? Nobody's perfect), but for whatever reason, the sexual tension/sensate stuff REALLY worked for me. I would like more of it.

If you don't want to write porn, I would be into a story about Rogan wooing Nevada with assists from her family. I'm also into Augustine, so if you want to do more with his rivalry with Rogan (preferably not over Nevada, though, thank you very much), I would be into that. Grandma Frida doing anything is fine with me, particularly if it involves buying bridal magazines, etc, to torture her granddaughter. I'm also interested in how Nevada is going to learn to expand her powers (she has to be a Prime without a house, right?), probably with the assistance of Rogan and Augustine. And in general, I'm a big fan of Nevada's family and her relationship/responsibility for them, so anything you want to do with that would be great.

Or you could just write me sex. That would be fine too.

Request #2

Fandom: Tennis RPF
Character(s): Any
Request: This is entirely Stan Wawrinka's fault, and I'll give you more alternatives, but what I really want is a superhero AU. For more, please see my letter.

So, in case you missed it, during or after Roland Garros, Stan said that players who won majors were mutants. See the following tweets:

I confess, my mind jumped immediately to fic. I'd love some sort of mixed ATP/WTA lineup with this, or maybe it's the dudes versus the women, or past players versus present, or upstarts trying to take over the tours*, or hell, Serena versus the world, I don't know. I'm 100% sure that however you do it, I'd be super into it.

*If you want to use this past summer's events (i.e. Kyrgios sledging Wawrinka's relationship with another player) and make him a supervillain or something, I'm not opposed to that if you do it in a way that's doesn't rip it off exactly, because that was pretty gross. But Kyrgios as a villain, that could maybe be awesome. (Despite that, I remain generally fond of him. I'm sorry, this is who I am.)

(Gael Monfils has to be some kind of elastic or stretch-based hero, though, I'm just saying. And Aga would obviously be The Ninja.)

If superheroes aren't your thing, I have alternatives! I'm incredibly into Serena/Caroline, whether that just be as adorable besties or otherwise. I didn't know I was into the idea of Woz/John Isner until she crashed his U.S. Open press conference, but if that's interesting to you, I'm into it. I would read gen about Simona Halep and Darren Cahill in a heartbeat. I feel like you could make a fic out of Andrea Petkovic, Life Coach to the WTA and ATP tours. If high school AUs are a thing for you, I firmly believe that Flavia and Fabio are homecoming king and queen. If you like your tennis players on the douchebaggy side, I love the Vasek Pospisil/Jack Sock/Nick Kyrgios/Thanasi Kokkanakis group (with side Madison Keys, her and Kyrgios playing mixed dubs at Wimbledon gave me LIFE.) (Addendum: Genie Bouchard and Nick playing doubles at the US Open ALSO gave me life, and so clearly Nick should just always do that since it is his best self. What I'm saying, is if you want to mix Genie in with this group I am not at all opposed even though I know that Genie claims she doesn't do the whole friends thing. You could also mix in Laura Robson if you want maximum ex-bestie awkwardness, I JUST REALLY LIKE THIS GROUP OF YOUNGSTERS, OKAY?) Speaking of Laura, her twitter account is basically my favorite of active players, so if you want to play with that and/or her and Andy Murray together as friends/detectives, I would be delighted. (I do not, however, ship it in a more traditional sense of the word.) Murray/Djokovic are a perennial fave for me. Andy Murray and Amelie Mauresmo working together is something I am incredibly interested in reading fic about, because Andy is my favorite and watching him constantly defend his decision has made me proud to be that. I'm into Federer/Stan. And the endless FIFA wars/mentorship that Murray has going on with the Aussie youngsters just makes me happy.

I'm trying to think if there's anything specific that I don't enjoy in the tennis world, and I'm sort of at a loss. I don't want you to write me anything with Federer/Nadal as a centerpiece, but if it shows up as a side element, that's fine too. If we matched on characters/people I didn't mention (totally possible given that I'm asking for any!), please feel free to contact me through the mods or anyone else to get ideas for who we did match on. Just because I didn't mention someone specifically doesn't mean I wouldn't happily read fic about them, because I really just love tennis and tennis players. I am really open to the possibilities here, so please feel free to write me whatever fic you want.

Request #3

Fandom: Dare Island Series - Virginia Kantra
Character(s): Josh Fletcher, Thalia Hamilton
Request: High school reunion sex, angsty prom night sex after she comes back from France, chance meeting summer abroad sex. Maybe this is another thing where I just want sex. I don't know. For more, please see my letter.

So, my friend Emma and I have taken to screaming DOOMED TEENS at each other about these two. They're a relatively minor part of the Dare Island series so far (I still hope that she'll give them their own book eventually), but for whatever reason, they've captured a very large part of my heart.

The last book, Carolina Blues, left us with Thalia having an offer to go to France for her senior year and her seemingly being torn about that, while her parents are all for it. We know that they have an existing conflict of Thalia wanting to go to UNC while Josh doesn't want to go to college at all. So even though it's pretty clear that they're super into each other, it's equally clear that their odds of making it past a high school romance (even before the France thing) are pretty low.

So I guess what I'm asking for is some kind of reunion story. Whether it's her coming back from France for Prom and Graduation and them reconnecting then or if it's ten years later and her first trip back to the island in years or whatever, I just want them to reconnect and to have an actual, honest to god shot.

With sex.

(Also, if there happen to have been years of letters/emails that were never sent, I'd also be super into that, because this is who I am. I'm sorry.)

Request #4

Fandom: The Reluctant Widow - Georgette Heyer
Character(s): Elinor Rochdale, Edward Carlyon
Request: COURTING, PLEASE. For more, please see my letter.

I'm going to excerpt the end of the book real quick for context and because I love it.

'Then-My Lord, I do not know what scheme you may have in your head, but-'

'I hope you will think better of this determination to seek another post as governess.'

'Well, I shall not, I assure you, sir! I told you once before that I would not become your pensioner, and I beg of you to believe that I meant it!'

'I hope that you will become my wife,' he replied, with all his usual calm.

She was stricken to silence, and was aware of nothing but the hammering of her heart in her chest.

He continued after a moment. 'I should not be making such a declaration to you yet, but I think my sentiments cannot be unknown to you.'

'Quite-quite unknown, my lord!' she said, in a voice which did not seem to be her own.

'I have tried to conceal them. It is too soon, and I would not upon an account embarrass you. But when the period of your strict mourning is over it is my very ardent desire to be permitted to pay my addresses to you.'

There's more, but that gets to the heart of it. GIVE ME COURTING OR GIVE ME DEATH.

There's just so much potential here. Ned trying to woo Elinor under the incredibly amused gaze of his sister, while Elinor is like, "dude, I already agreed to marry you, can we get to that part please." But he promised and running away to Gretna Green is just not the done thing, you know. If you want to mimic the gothic mystery tone of the book, that's cool, but I don't need it. I just need the courting. Because I do.

Request #5
Fandom: Cainsville series by Kelley Armstrong
Character(s): Olivia Armstrong-Jones, Gabriel Walsh, Ricky Gallagher
Request: Sex. Sex. And more sex. (Or okay, other stuff is fine too.) For more, please see my letter.

This is what I requested last year. This is what my friend requested (and I helped with the chatfic part) last year.

All of that still stands.

In fact, I want all of that even more after the third book, which ramped the OT3 aspect of the series up to about a billion. Olivia loves them both! Ricky knows the worst thing he could ever do is come in between them! Gabriel isn't going to kill Ricky for the fae's plots! Their past selves were idiots who didn't bother sticking together and they're not going to make the same mistakes!

I AM JUST SUPER INTO WHERE IT SEEMS LIKE ALL OF THIS IS GOING.

Now, if poly isn't your thing, I'm really sorry for how much it seems like I'm into this. Well, I'm not sorry for being into it, but I'd like to give you some other options, because I know poly's not for everyone.

I would be into a story about any of the three characters at earlier points in their lives. I would be into a story about their past selves, maybe a different version that the book doesn't tell us. I'd like a non-shippy version of the OT3 just being what they are in the books. I will also be completely fine with shipfic of any two of these characters, provided there isn't any ship/character bashing involved with that.

But I really do want sex.

Request #6

Fandom: Hamilton - Miranda
Character(s): Alexander Hamilton, Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton
Request: Courting? Established relationship? Reconciliation? Home life? I WANT ALL OF IT. For more, please see my letter.

So first, I haven't actually seen the show yet. I will not see it until April, but I've listened to the cast recording approximately a million times and while I haven't read the Chernow biography yet (damn you library wait lists), I don't really believe in spoilers for American history. I say all of this to say that if you're interested in using anything outside the scope of the musical (the letters, the rest of their children, other historical events not covered, etc.), I am completely cool with that. In fact, I would encourage it, if only because the courting letters have completely fucked my shit up.

To wit:

I had written so far when the express arrived with your dear billet under cover of one from your guardian. I cannot tell you what extacy I felt in casting my eye over the sweet effusions of tenderness it contains. My Betseys soul speaks in every line and bids me be the happiest of mortals. I am so and will be so. You give me too many proofs of your love to allow me to doubt it and in the conviction that I possess that, I possess every thing the world can give. The good Meade had the kindness to tell me that you received my letter with apparent marks of joy and that you retired with eagerness to read it. Tis from circumstances like these we best discover the true sentiments of the heart. Yours upon every occasion testifies that it is intirely mine. But notwithstanding all I have to thank you and to love you for, I have a little quarrel with you. I will not permit you to say you do not deserve the preference I give you, you deserve all I think of you and more and let me tell you your diffidence with so many charms is an unpardonable amiableness. I am pleased with it however on one account which is that it will induce you to call your good qualities into full activity, and there is nothing I shall always delight in more than to assist you in unfolding them in their highest perfection. I have spun out this letter much longer than I intended. It is now half an hour past our time of meeting. I must bid you adieu. Adieu my charmer; take care of your self and love your Hamilton as well as he does you. God bless you
AH

And that was EARLY in their courtship. The line about "I wrote Eliza love letters until she fell" in Hurricane, well, yes, who wouldn't have?

Regarding the show itself, I'm really fascinated with the theme of being enough that Miranda wove into their relationship. You see it in That Would Be Enough when Eliza sings about it generally, and specifically with "And I could be enough/And we could be enough/That would be enough." We know, of course, that however much they love each other (and I believe they genuinely did in history and in the show), that they weren't enough. She repeats it, a little more frustrated in Non-Stop with, "If I could grant you peace of mind/Would that be enough?" (Leaving aside being enough for a moment, the married affection in "Angelica, tell my wife John Adams doesn't have a real job anyway" KILLS ME, in addition to it being a sick burn.) And then it's flipped in It's Quiet Uptown, when he's telling her that if she'll just give him a chance, they can get through the terrible thing that's happened together. That if he could, he'd give his life for their son's so she would smile. It's a lot.

If you wanted to play with this theme, the times when it was almost enough or the times that it wasn't, that would be amazing.

As for why I fell so hard into this, I can't really tell you. I mean, I'm into plenty of other ships for this show, especially the can't-be tragedy of Angelica/Hamilton and the doomed rivals part of Hamilton/Burr. But man. Something about this one just tugs at me. Maybe it's that you know it's going to end badly. Maybe it's that despite everything, she did find a way to forgive him. Maybe it's the shared grieving. Maybe it's the fact that they had a second baby and named him Philip and he was still a toddler when Hamilton died. Maybe it's that she spent 50 years (50 YEARS!!!) wanting to be reunited with him. I DON'T KNOW.

I just know that I love it.

As for what I want in fic, I'm really up for pretty much anything here. Epistolary? SURE. Missing scenes? SURE. Domestic fluff? SURE. Putting a marriage back together? SURE. Sex? SURE.

But keep the air of tragedy, okay? Because I am 99% sure that's one of the things I like so much about it. I'm sorry, this is who I am.

*

And that's it! Thank you again for writing for me, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you've written me come December 25th.

Love,

Me

yuletide
