The way Emmett sees it, there are certain things in life that you just know, things that are indisputably true. Things like the Yankees are evil or that politicians are corrupt or you never get involved in a land war in Asia. The day that Emmett meets Elle Woods, he adds another thing to his list: she's out of his league.

Sure, when they meet she's more than a little bit ditzy, but she's undeniably beautiful, rich, and buried under the dumb blonde routine, he can tell that there's something else there. But she's in love with another man and Emmett has too much self respect to be anyone's consolation prize. He puts her in the box labeled not a chance in the world and moves on.

The thing he didn't understand about Elle, not back then, was that she refuses to stay in a box.

And so they get to know each other, and he gets to help her open her eyes to everything she can really be, and with every smile, every careless touch of her well-manicured hand on his arm, she pries open the lid on that box and worms her way out and into his heart, and there's nothing he can do to stop it. The first time she hugs him, there's nothing he wants to do to stop it. He still thinks she's out of his league.

The thing that he still didn't understand about Elle was that she has no conception of what that phrase means.

When she chooses him over Warner, it's a surprise. It's a surprise every day after that when she keeps choosing him, over and over again. He doesn't think it will ever stop being a surprise.

This is something that Emmett knows about Elle Woods: he loves her.
