The first time Jack sings to the baby, it surprises Angela. Surprises Angela because there's barely even a baby to sing to; she only told him two days ago. Surprises Angela because Jack isn't really the singing type, even when they're lying in bed like they're doing right now. Maybe even especially then.
"Sweetie?" she asks, combing her fingers through his hair.
The singing stops immediately and he looks up from where he's tracing absent patterns on her stomach. "Yes?"
"Were you singing just now?" she asks, trying to keep her face totally straight.
He nods, cheeks a little red. "I've been reading," he says. "It's good for the baby to learn our voices. And music is good for their development."
She blinks in surprise. "When have you had time to read?" she asks curiously. It's been two days. There hasn't really been time, not yet.
He shrugs and looks so embarrassed that she can't help but find it adorable. "I just did," he says. "It's not a big deal. If it bothers you, I don't have to-"
She cuts him off, laying a finger over his mouth to silence him. "No," she says. "It's sweet." It's also kind of weird, but she thinks she'll be able to get over that.
He smiles, hopefully, and her heart melts. She loves him.
"Yeah?" he asks.
"Yeah," she says, and she leans down to kiss him.
After that, they're both too distracted to think about singing.
