.) Stick to common calibers. It'll be much easier to find 9mm than .357SIG. Guns that can take multiple types of ammo are a plus: Someone with a .357 Magnum or .454 Casull, for example, should remember to scrounge .38 or .45LC. Even if the "primary" ammo is available, stocking up on the "secondary" can be a good idea.

For this reason the Sig Sauer P250 may be an excellent choice.

.) Check your state's laws about silencers. If it is possible, obtain silencers for your firearms immediately, and threaded barrels where necessary. If this is not possible, learn how to make a good one and get the threaded barrels anyway (shouldn't be a problem except in California) because when the zombies rise up the ATF will have other things to worry about.

.) Preferably, your sidearm should be a .45ACP weapon with a suppressor, a la USP Compact Tactical. Yes, H&K is pricey. You may be able to find a perfectly serviceable alternative for less. In fact, I encourage it. (Just remember, HK's famously bad customer service will not be a concern). I mention their USP Tactical line a lot because sufficiently high-end custom 1911's tend to be expensive as hell.

.) How much gunsmithing do you know how to do? Can you time an internal 1911 extractor? This sort of thing will become more important as you run hundreds of rounds through your guns without being able to ship them off to customer service for warranty work.

.) Even though most rifles fire supersonic ammo and revolvers cannot be effectively silenced, keeping a suppressed .45 carbine as a companion piece to your sidearm is not the end-all, be-all. You may need to defend yourself from live humans. Sometimes noise must be made. What you choose for your loadout will depend on what you expect to encounter. Remember, every new weapon you carry adds significant weight.

.) Buy spare parts. If you think it might break, get two more. If you are surviving as part of a group, try to ensure commonality. If everyone in the group has an AR-15, they will be in better shape than the group that consists of a hodge-podge of ARs, AKs, Mini-14s and a SIG-556.

.) Plant a garden if you have any intention of sticking around. You can get by with just potatoes indefinitely on a surprisingly small plot of land, but try and go for some variety for health's sake, and remember the importance of fertilizer and crop rotation. There are many gardening manuals out there and nursery staff is often happy to answer questions. You will need to protect your garden from hungry passers-by.
