So I’ve got a place to live in Boston. And it’s a nice place too.
It about a 15-20 minute commute to Emerson on the ‘T’ and it’s in a very nice area that is obviously lived in by students, mostly going to Emerson, Boston University, and Boston College. It’s located in one of the outside communities about half an hour away from the heart of Boston inside Allston. It’s only a block away from one of the major ‘T’ lines located on Commonwealth Avenue, which will take me to Tremont Street (Where my classes will be help) and Boylston Street (Where the campus stores and offices are located) plus, something I might have neglected to mention before, my campus and the ‘T’ stops I’ll have to take usually will take me almost directly to the Boston Commons, a truly beautiful area.
Anyway, we saw a little over a dozen places this time around from students, advertisers on the web and two realtors. The realtors, which were asking a minimum of $750 a month to as high as $900 a month, showed me some of the seediest, dingiest rooms to a few of the nicest, largest rooms that were within my price range across the Allston, Brighton, Brookline and Boston proper areas...if I only had a few more hundred dollars a month to afford some of these studios, one of them was in the basement of this gentleman’s house, a stable house I believe it was called, was at least 4x the size of my room not including a full bathroom, parking spot, computer room and a full kitchen. That one was $875 a month but was missing two things: nearness to some other students (I do want to develop some friendships and relationships at Emerson) and the fact that I’d be totally alone. Some people want to be alone, I’d prefer to at least live next to some people, especially some people around my age, so I could at least interact with people.
We were still thinking about the offers the two realtors when we met Drew at 5:00 PM is Allston, now don’t ask me why, I just felt something. I liked the sound of her voice; she seemed nice, genuine and really interested in selling the place. So we met her, and she showed us the place: the bottom floor of a two floor house that has a full size living room, TV room, full size bathroom, fully equipped and furnished kitchen, three bedrooms (I am up for two of them along with this guy Graham, one is smaller than the other two so I am going to have to see what wheeling and dealing I can do when I get in touch with him) but it is still a really nice sized room and I can see a lot of possibilities with both of them. Once she finished the tour we met in the kitchen and I basically told her: ‘I like this place, it has everything I need and if no one else is really up for it I would like it’ She was thrilled, she was going to go on vacation with her parents (They rented a boat to go sailing near the British Islands...wow...) and she wanted to have both rooms taken so she wouldn’t have to worry about it, and now she did. She really didn’t expect for me to take the place that day, as a matter of fact I think she didn’t expect to have the place rented at all before she left, so once we showed interest and we talked for a bit she was already getting done all my contact info and telling me about how she was going to get me the lease and all about the place, herself and the area. The whole place costs $625 a month, which includes all utilities except heat, plus about $30 a month for DSL/HBO Cable Package which, even if it gets as high as about $700 a month, still places it well beneath my price range and just makes my life a hell of a lot easier in the long run.
She’s from Texas too; (Some place called Clear Lake Shores) just transferred to Emerson as a Sophomore and the guy whose living there with us, Graham, is an incoming Freshman to Emerson who couldn’t find housing and decided to live off campus and commute like the rest of us- so I’m the old man of this house by almost three years. Odd...and in some way fitting, two Undergrads and one Grad student, who knows...should be an interesting living situation and I hope for at least one or two sitcom moments each week; just for the hell of it.
Well I’ll be leaving in about one month now, and be moving in and set about September 1st, and then I go and start the next chapter of my life. With new people, new school, new city and pretty much a whole new start things. Maybe a chance to correct some things, do some things over right...or maybe just a chance to make up for some things. All I know is that a chance for a new start with a life that’s pretty much all your own again do not come too often, so I think I’d better take advantage of it.
