Ooo very interesting tutorial! I've never attempted to color a b&w image, but I think I'll have to give it a try with these tips =).

It really is fun when you find something that works. :D I'd love to see what you come up with if you try it out!

It took me a while to figure out a good way as well...hardest part is usually getting the right skintone. But if you have any questions about it, go right ahead and ask! And good luck. :D

I am in total awe of you having made this...I LOVE it, I had a play, had trouble with the lips and getting them right so left that part out, will get better with practice I think, but I am totally in love with the idea and concept.
This is what I came up with

Nice! I think the only thing I would suggest, if you don't mind, is that when you screen it (assuming you did so), take a soft eraser on low opacity over the parts of the icon that turned out too light and/or fiddle with the contrast on specific areas so that the features of the face stand out more.

It does take a bit of practice, but it looks like you're well on your way! :D

just wondering, which program are you using when you do this?

As mentioned in the beginning of the tutorial, I use Corel Paint Shop Pro XI, but I don't do any steps that require inputting values (like Color Balance, Curves, etc.), so it should easily translate to Photoshop and other versions of PSP (and probably GIMP, but I'm not sure exactly how it works).
