Today I am thinking about the human condition and what it means to be alive and to interact with one another. Life is so chaotic that we often find ourselves unaware of the decisions that we make instead relying on distractions to humour ourselves. The true nature of our being is complex and uncertain, and it is that uncertainty which makes living so hard, because ultimately we are aware that every one of us must face our destiny which is death and that is inescapable.
i have for a long time distracted myself from this reality using copious amounts of alcohol and other mind altering substances only to find that death's ugly face was still grinning at me around every corner and only to find that I was in no better of a position than I was when I started and so all of my striving was ultimately fruitless and the only thing I really can do is accept my fate.
What I think that means is to stop living for myself. It is very easy to live for one's self but it is also very shallow. All human life on the surface is very shallow because it requires so much energy simply to take care of our body and to some people that becomes what living is about, taking care of our body, but there are things much deeper than that which we fail to recognize in the midst of our distractions.
It is much more fulfilling to give to other people, to ensure the safety and well beng of those around you, because that is what life is really about, developing a sense of community. People love to fall back upon their hates and prejudices because it seems to make things simpler when we have someone to blame for our misgivings but in reality we all must acce[t responsibility for our own fate and take what is given to us and deal with it.
I think it was Camus who said that tthe only real philosophical question was whether or not to commit suicide and this is true because we cannot change existence because existence is a continually evolvng state and we can no more lay our impressions upon it than can we lay our impressions upon the sun, but we can be a part of it and that is what is important.
People seeem to forget why their interactions matter so much and we develop friendships and relationships almost haphazardly without the realization of how these bonds affect us. This is sad because our carelessness leads to us hurting one another when it was not the goal, persay, that we had in mind. Of course it easy to see how our actions create disquietude once they have already been made but advancement is made in trying to achieve above these circumstances.
It is very hard to become an importanrt part of another person's life and that is what we all strive for and we call it love. I think that the thing which we call love is so difficult because a lot of people are so concentrated upon themselves that they have no mental ability to focus on another person. This is why many relationships fail, because people lack the ability to care for and help one another.
Many people wish for world peace but I think that is impossuble because there is no such thing as inner peace. We all go through turmoil and strife in our own lives because we bear the burden of choosing and makng decisions that we have no idea how they wll affect us in the future, so we kind of blindly make bridges into abysmal lots of space. i have never met a sngle person who hasn't at some pont been depressed and who hasn't done something which they regretted, becuase that is how we learn, we make mistakes and change our actions in the future and realize how little we know.
It is this great unknowing which haunts us, because however much we do know we can never really know anything. Tomorrow is everybody's mystery and we can't change that and that is why we are afraid. We're afraid of the future because it is so absurd and we face this absurdity every day and it never gets easier and we never get a more logical grasp upon it.
So really life is just a blind struggle with no happy outcome. You live and you die and inbetween you try your best just to survive against all odds. You hurt and you cry and there's nobody there to hold your hand to keep you from falling because everyone is trying just as hard as you are to stand up straight and that's the way it is. You make a choice and you live with it regardless of whether or not you wanted to make the choice in the beginning, we just have to do it and we don't get to make that choice.
That is why death is the greatest gift of all, because you are finally free from making choices and you don't have to deal with your decision and it's the only time you'll truly be at peace with yourself, all the chaos and turmoil of life will have washed away.
So in regards to Camus' ultimate philosophical question, whether or not to commit suicide, the answer really is a question in and of itself, and that is "How should I live for today?"
