+ nyc v01 +

today justin and i ventured to nyc from boston, where we had spent the last few days with his family. we started spring break at his house because i had an interview with a design firm in west newton, ma, just west of boston. my experience was less than desired.. with the firm, not his family; they were great. in fact, they paid for our hotel room for the five days were spending in nyc.

nyc started out terribly. we arrived at the hotel because we wanted to get an early start on the day and visit a museum or two. at noon we attempted to check in, when they informed us that we had to return at 3pm to check in. we didn't need the room at all, we told them, we just wanted them to acknowledge that we were there so they didn't give our room away to someone else. they basically told us too damn bad, and that we were required to check in at precisely 3pm or we would lose our room.

that ruined me. i had my hopes set on seeing a design museum that we have no other time to visit this week. bummer. i was beyond cranky. i had a crappy sandwich immediately afterwards, too, at europa cafe. fuck that.

i have learned a few things about nyc:

+ everyone has the same dog
+ trash is everywhere and some people eat it
+ all blond girls are on cellphones and think you should alter your walking route for them
+ starbucks only exists on every corner south of times square
+ you are never moving fast enough to please anyone else
+ everyone wants you to take their fliers
+ the subway is frightening at rush hour

the day improved throughout the evening. we found an amazing sushi restaurant, natsumi which served gigantic pieces of sashimi that were as delicious as they were big. i have photos but i am too lazy to upload them. their interior design was delicious, too.

afterwards, we went to a small desert bar, kyotofu, were they served tea, sake and tasty tofu treats. i had a vanilla walnut mousse with apricot caramel and maple whipped topping. justin had a raspberry chocolate cake with green tea whipped topping. our cinnamon rosehip tea was delectable. i also have photos of their interior, too. their minimalistic, modern interior was a visual relief from the overwhelming and cluttered street.

we went back to the hotel to find about sixty irishmen and women in the lobby desperately trying to use the two slow elevators. apparently, nyc imports irish dancers for their parade, which i will be sleeping through on saturday morning.
