Rule #3: Be an asset to your community

I was reading the news about more gang violence on the west side. I started thinking about how fucked up it was to grow up a teen without great parental guidance out there, and how easy it was to fall into the 'ghetto trap' of getting caught up in cliques and violence.

I decided I want to start an after school program teaching troubled teenagers web design. There is a lot of information to figure out, but I'm going to try to do this at Kearns High and hopefully manage to make it worthy of detention hours or something.

Considering my troubled past and what learning about computers saved me from, I think it's something I absolutely have to do for kids without those options.

I already contacted one of my old bosses who does instructional design. He sent me over some information on how to properly design curriculum and I've tracked down contact information for some school counselors and police officers, I think this should get me going in the right direction.

There are a lot of things to figure out as far as logistics go, but I think I can pull it together even though it's going to obviously cost a fair amount of money and time to make happen.

I figure if I can keep kids off the street 2 nights a week, and teach them all the ins and outs of taking a website from concept to completion, I will give them a lot of options as far as future potential goes. Jobs, more school, pursuing their own passions... it's fairly endless.

We'll see what I can make happen. :)
