I'm gonna make a post about the music that I have started listening to since I've been deployed down here in Manta, Ecuador in no particular order. Consider this my Songs of Summer 2007. My wife said I needed something to keep me occupied so here is me being occupied. Very lengthy but prob only one or two people will even read this so suck it!
BB King- Three o' Clock: This song is a duet with Eric Clapton that I heard one of the many nights listening to music at the smoke pit. This song is blues at its finest. It is a story about a man keeping himself up late at night because he can't find his lover. The raw emotion shown in this song is just downright scary. The guitar is just that type of playing that makes you sit down and just feel how the person feels at that exact moment. No one can do that like the two men playing in this song. Just amazing I tell you.
Deltron 3030- 3030: This great song with Del the Funky Homosapien as the main lyricist. The lyrics are great but what gets me is the beats done by Dan the Automator. Its a very chill song that you can just turn on and close your eyes and let your mind escape to the sounds of very low key beats and catchy lyrics.
Bob Sinclair - World Hold On (Children of The Sky): Oh my god! If there was one song that I would have to give credit to going out with friends to a club and just chillin' in the back of the club and have a good time, this would be that song. This song..God this song is beyond awesome. The song has been out for a few years now and is mixed my Bob Sinclair, who is a prolific French DJ who has literally changed the club scene in Europe. Have you ever had a song that makes you want to dance even after hearing it a million times at club? I can now say that I have. That fun driving bass loop, beautiful whistling, and easy lyrics is what makes this song what it is. Find it download it and enjoy.
Colin Hay- I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You: A song from the Garden State Soundtrack, this acoustic song almost brought a tear to my eye when I first heard it. What can I say about this song...hmm. This is the type of song that when you listen to you will either be reminded of the "one who got away" or you will be reminded of the pain of being away from the one you love. I don't know why I liked this song so much but I can't stop listening to it late at night to put me to sleep. Great song if you are into acoustic sound and an almost Bob Dylan raspy edge to it.
Earl Scruggs- Fiddle & Banjo- Here is a big surprise for me. Bluegrass. Thats right good ol' southern bluegrass. I was turned to bluegrass from a guy down here named Travis. He's from Missouri and is a country boy at heart. He and a friend of mine named Ray Scott (from Va.) were sittin' down at the smoke pit drinking like we always. Travis put this song on and my ears perked up and I fell in love with the music. It has a very acquired taste to it so if I get flamed for it so be it. Earl Scruggs is the Banjo player and Lester Flatts is the Fiddler. Just two guys jamming like they were sittin' on a log drinking moonshine out of mason jars having a good ol' time. I love it!
Sublime- Freeway Time in LA County Jail: From their first album Robbin' da' Hood, sublime lays out a nice and steady blues riff with Bradley singing about daydreaming about being out of jail. Thinking about being back home just doin' what he does. This song is exactly how I feel being down here in my jail of a room. I've caught myself thinking about just chillin' with my friends just doin' whatever it is that makes me happy. I feel ya' Bradley!
Iron Maiden- The Trooper: 80's Hair Metal??? Fuck yes. This song is what just gets me goin' when I was at the gym. Why? Because thats part of the only playlist that they have that actually is American music. Yeah we are in a latin country but COME ON! The guitar solos by Dave Murry and Adrian Smith are just EPIC. Nothing better then a face melting solo to get you pumper up to bench press 225lbs(thats right bitches!)
Les Claypool and the Flying Frog Brigade- Cosmic Highway: In homage to my father I am choosing this song. I was bored one day (like most of the days) and I asked myself what would my dad listen to if he was in the situation. This is what I came up with. A downright stunning bass line by Les Claypool talking about traveling away from Earth on the Cosmic Highway to the moon. This song is just fun to listen to while sitting on the bed dickin' around on the computer.
Celia Cruz- La Vida Es Un Carnaval: What would be a music playlist made in South America without some Latin Music? It would be crap! Celia Cruz is like a god down here in Ecuador. Her music is heard EVERYWHERE and is heard by EVERYONE! The funny thing about this song was I was in a taxi on my way to buy bootleg DVD's when this song came up and I told the drive (in Spanish) to turn the radio up because this is one of my favorite songs. He looked at me with this baffled face and said (in Spanish) You speak Spanish? LOL uhh yeah I've been known to speak a lil' Spanish. Shit my grandmother is Mexican what do you think? I told him yes and to once again turn up the radio. We both "rocked" out to the song and sang as much as we knew....he knew a little more then I did, but nonetheless it was great!
Linkin' Park- What I've Done: I know by now (if you actually read all of this) you are asking yourself Linkin' Park...Patrick...really? Well yes. I was sitting in the room getting ready for work one morning listening to MTV when the video to this song came on. Now I hate it when celebrities try to get involved with politics, but they didn't do too bad. For a song its a great song, only if you don't read to much into the lyrics. Its a somewhat moving song and whenever I hear it I will be reminded of Ecuador and the times I had there.
Weezer- Say It Ain't So: Another older song on my list, this song is on the list for one person Capt. Matt Stanley. EVERY time that he went to the gym he was wearing a Weezer T-shirt and biking shorts. Did he not bring any other clothes to work out in or does he just reallly love this song. Well, we were on the jet one day when one of the crewmembers started playing this song over the Net. The best part about it was the minute I went up to the flight deck all I could hear was Matt singing this song at the top of his lungs with everyone else up there telling him to shut up. Classic moment.
Thats all I'll post for now but trust me there will be more. This is fun...still to come! More Bluegrass, More Music, and More funny stories!
