It was painful.

Seeing Xerxes like this had always bothered Liam in so many ways than one. Whenever he was hurt, whenever he was sad (assuming that Break actually felt genuinely sad), or even whenever he just looked broken. None of those suited the man who always wore that clown like grin. The man who constantly teased him because he was an easy target.

The man who he considered a close friend.

Not only had he thrown a piece of candy at him, to which he didn't dodge, but he had placed his hand not even five inches from the man's face. Hadn't he been through enough? His past, the present, all the burdens he had to carry? Liam wouldn't pity him. Not at all. That would be the last thing Xerxes wanted to have someone feel for him, and he knew it well.

"Will you tell the others?" Liam asked, his tone dragged down with sadness as he adjusted his glasses.

"Will it help our cause ~ ?"

"I suppose not."

Looking at Xerxes had become even worse when seeing that smile that he held. It stabbed him, twisted the sword in his wound until he bled his heart out, and then left him there, bewildered and pained, as the man held this new burden. That smile was the most sincere he'd ever seen. It was as if it was made of broken glass that a small child tried to glue together before their parents got home to realize something valuable was lost.

The only difference was that this time Xerxes couldn't fix it. Nobody could. And it hurt.

"You know I'm here for you, just like any other time, right?" Liam's question was laced with concern, a frown upon his face that Xerxes could hear through his voice. That was one thing that made Liam a bit more at ease. Xerxes had never been one to read the atmosphere completely well, but he could decipher the tones and tell what a person was feeling by just that.

"Of course, of course ~ Just like all the others would say," he spoke, waving it off as nothing important while he reached a hand out for a pastry, only to miss by far.

Frowning, Liam reached over and took his hand in his, holding it there for a second before allowing himself to place the hand back onto Xerxes' lap. It was obvious the man was confused, but Liam said nothing. Instead, he reached his own hand over and picked up one of the pastries that Break had been reaching for, his other hand adjusting his glasses once more. "Open up your mouth, will you?"

Xerxes didn't question. It was all too easy to tell what Liam was thinking of and instantly opened his mouth in a comedic way, even allowing himself to do the classic 'aah' as his mouth stayed open, awaiting whatever Liam was going to give him. And then the taste of sweet dough entered his mouth, his teeth bit into it and chewed as he smiled happily.

That was one thing Liam could never forget about Xerxes. When he was down, he was able to play it off as if nothing had happened, not worrying anybody, or at least, trying not to worry anybody. He couldn't help but smile at this thought, placing the pastry back into the open mouth of the awaiting hatter sitting on the bed, watching him chew it happily and await more each time. He must be enjoying this too much.

"It's good that you're smiling, Liam ~"

And even though he couldn't see, Liam knew that he could see all too well without his sight.

He would never be in the darkness for long if he had the final say.
