I've been feeling ambivalent about the news lately. I was up until 4:00a.m. last night even though I had to work this morning and I was watching live footage of Israeli soldiers overseeing the removal of Israeli citizens from settlements on the Gaza Strip. Most of the settlers shown were children or young adults and the soldiers were carrying them away one by one as they sat motionless, crying tears of a pain I can hardly imagine. I don't think that the settlers should be living there, but I feel so much empathy for them because I know how much they love their homeland and how much they wholeheartedly believe they are entitled to live there.
Another top story in the news today is about Pat Robertson declaring on television that the U.S. should assassinate Hugo Chavez and how much of a ruckus that has caused in South and Central America. I don't think I've ever agreed with Pat Robertson on anything, but I do think Chavez should be immediately deposed; though I don't know I'd necessarily say he should be assassinated, that would get the job done. I actually think it would be good for the world if both Robertson and Chavez were decommissioned so maybe they should shoot each other at the same time. One. Two. Three. Go.
On a somewhat related note (via the Chavez-Castro connection), I saw that the U.S. is now limiting Cuban Americans to visit Cuba only once every three years and allowing them only to see immediate family members, and they are not allowed to leave money. Before this the rule was that Cuban Americans could visit Cuba once per year to see whoever they wished and to leave as much money as they wanted. I think it would be good for the world if Castro was removed from power, either indirectly by enforcing strict international sanctions, or by another means, but it is tremendously saddening to think of all those families that will now be separated due to something which is largely out of their control. Castro must be about 115 years old now, though, so he can't hold out for much longer. I wonder what will happen when he is gone.
