Chapter IV - Ethiopia I

So I've been working on a book about my travels 2012-2022. Well I've spent I think nearly two years now just on the first year, which is not a very promising pace to ever finish but I think it's accelerating now a bit. In other news, writing a book length memoir is an interesting endeavour with entirely different challenges from the usual short ( Read more... )

My first book took me about 10 years to write, so I think you're doing fine. (grin)

It's a mystery novel (police procedural) that's being published/released in April 2023.

the above paragraph is included both “because it happened,” but I’m worried this may be taken as like I’m trying to portray myself as a lady magnet which isn’t a good look, what do you think?
I think it's funny enough that it has to be included.

FWIW, I find the different calendar and time system fascinating.

And they really do use their different clock system! I'm only realizing now that it doesn't really come up again in the chapter but I could easily insert it somewhere, someone telling me what time we're doing something and me being like "Ethiopian time or?" which did actually occur more than once

I think Ethiopian time may be akin to Swahili time, which starts at 6 am, but counts that as hour zero. It gets very confusing. Btw, for religious purposes, Hebrew does something similar, but secular Hebrew matches"Western" time zones.

The two scenes flow well, seem to be a good introduction to Ethiopia, and explain some of the cultural differences clearly without dwelling on them. I guess at some point you'll have to make a decision - are you writing a travel log or are you writing a book regarding beekeeping differences and trends around Africa. If you decide it's a travel log (which you have a good start on here), you may need to include one illustrated chapter with the various beekeeping terms and equipment drawn out and explained. For instance, the frame bee hive vs other types you've mentioned in the past, and the spinner.
