Cato looks so deliciously content on your shoulder. (What do you feed him to make him super-sized? And also beautiful!)
We did the trolley problem in Idol this season, week 9. There were some really good entries.
I agree about character's character. I think some writers create idealized versions of themselves instead of building characters, who can be tested within the boundaries of their characters.
Most of the time when I try to create a character it's a complete mess. So mostly I don't. I let the characters come to me and reveal themselves through the story. I have no idea who they are, or where they come from, or how they get on the page before me. So, there's not a lot I can offer on the subject, but I can't wait to read your story. Combining the trolley problem with Kobayashi Maru would certainly give your characters an emotional workout.
I'll often start by thinking of someone I know in real life as0the basis of a character's personality. Over time they'll diverge a bit and come into their0own but that way they'll at least start out complex.

I really like this! I know a few people who would love it, too - can I share this post with them? (Most of them aren't on livejournal anymore, I don't think, and I've completely forgotten LJ etiquette!)
I do seriously intend to continue that story, I've got this whole novel envisioned for that one. I keep meaning to get back to more writing, maybe some day! ::looks off into the distance::
