Monday was amazing!
Ross from my new favourite band
Russell from my second new favourite band
I do apologise for the crappy quality of my pics, my camera is shite and my brother cannot take pictures without getting his finger in the way of the lens.
After the train stopped for about half an hour and I thought we were going to be late, we finally arrived at the UEA. A few of the Kaiser Cheifs walked past whilst we were in the queue and nobody recognised them - they even got asked if they had spare tickets they wanted to sell. Once we got inside we staked a place on the left handside about 3 or 4 rows back, but when the Kaiser Chiefs finally came on, the left were all stood still and it was the middle and right hand side who were really lively! So we gradually made our way into the middle.
Kaiser Chiefs - Brilliant showmanship. During the height of one song Ricky even did the whole rock n' roll stage dive thing (and the not so rock n' roll act of tossing your jacket off before neatly placing it on a hanger the roadie had previsouly prepared for you). I just don't think their songs are that much cop. I Predict a Riot is good, but Oh My God almost comes across as laughable. Still, the opening slot is always hard to play and they did a pretty good job of warming up the crowd.
Bloc Party - Although I've heard a lot about how fantastic they are, I couldn't really get into them that much before. I really liked Helicopter and brought the Banquet EP, and I was looking forward to seeing them but I wasn't a huge fan of So Here We Are. But I've come away totally converted (and with a new found respect for So Here We Are). They opened with The Marshals Are All Dead, which is good for me, since it was one I knew. Much of the crowd didn't know it, but that didn't make the slightest bit of difference. The whole crowd really went for it, and they responded to the crowd, all building up to the frenzy that was Helicopter and ending with Little Thoughts. Absolutely amazing.
Bloc Party really took it out of me, and at several points in whilst we were waiting for The Futureheads I thought I was going to throw up or black out. But I didn't want to loose the good poisition we'd gotten into for the Futureheads. So me and my brother decided we'd go to the back for The Killers, since we were both more excited about seeing The Futureheads anyway, and the majority of the crowd were there to see The Killers. Then Queen came on the speakers, and got the whole crowd was singing and swaying, and just at the climax of the song, The Futureheads came onto the stage.
The Futureheads - I was expecting good things from them, but not this good. They absolutely blew me away. I am still dumbfounded by how good they were, and the reception they got from the crowd was fantastic. As I said before, the majority of people were there mainly for The Killers, but I think it was The Futureheads that really got the crowd going and, frankly, were the more enjoyable. But it got to the point where I had to go because I was going to faint. And then they started playing Stupid and Shallow. And I couldn't bear to tear myself away. So I gave that one song my all, before fighting my way to the bar to drink 2 pints of water. I saw Russell from Bloc Party at the back of the room, but decided to watch the rest of The Futureheads from the side before. For Hounds of Love they split the room in half, with Ross's side doing the 'Oh, oh oh" and Jaff's doing the 'Oh, OH, OH'. Eeee, is was so good. They finished off with Piece of Crap, which I have never heard before but immediately went and downloaded once I got home. Apprarently they are thinking playing there on their headline tour in April/May - just in time for my birthday and just in the massive void between The Hives concert I am going to and the Green Day one.
So after the Futureheads, I met up with my brother again and brought him a pint. Is it wrong that me, the 17 year old, was on the water whlilst buying beer for my 15 year old brother? Anyway, we found Russell from Bloc Party was still at the back of the room talking to a few ppl, so after he'd finished talking to them, I talked to him for a bit and had my picture taken with him. He was really sweet, happy to pose for my pics and seemed quite bashful when I said how great I thought the band were. I brought myself a gorgeous green Futureheads top (although they'd run out of the fitted sizes, so it is just a normal T-shirt) and a couple of Bloc Party badges.
When the Killers started up, we got a prime place at the side at the back, where we could see but weren't in the crowd...
The Killers - I think it may not be fair for me to comment on them, since I wasn't actually in the main crowd, but I did find myself slightly disappionted. Maybe it was beacause they played quite a few new songs, or B-sides that I hadn't heard (but this didn't seem to matter with Bloc Party), or maybe it was just because I had been promised so much by their performance and they didn't exceed these expectations like the previous two groups. Still, Mr Brightside was amazing, a long with Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll, Somebody Told Me and (for me) Midnight Show. They certainly didn't spoil the evening, just it wasn't them I was raving about all day at 6th Form on Tuesday.
The Killers ended with All These Things... and we decided to beat the crowds by heading for the door. there we bumped into (quite literally, he turned round and apologised to me!) Ross from the Futureheads, who had come out to see The Killers finale. So we talked to him and I got my picture taken with him. Again, another really sweet bloke.
When we went outside, Ricky from the Kasier Cheifs was there, so we got our photos taken with him and the drummer (what is his name? I forget...) and then Barry from the Futureheads came out to. So I got my album cover signed by and Ross, who said 'Thank You' before making sure that I knew he wasn't being sarcastic! As we were walking out, we saw somebody else signing stuff, and it turned out to be Jaff from the Futureheads, so now the only Futurehead who hasn't signed my album is Dave, the drummer. Still, I shall just have to sort that out in May...
