.zip Track List:
1. Pan's Labyrinth Lullaby - Javier Navarrete
[Instrumental]
The feel of this song reminds me of Kvothe as he is when he meets Chronicler at the start of the novel. Worn, calm, with a fierce regret and longing intermixed.
2. The Sun Is Often Out - Patrick Wolf
Was your work of art so heavy
That it would not let you live?
You are missed.
Kvothe's feelings towards his parents, especially his father, who was writing a song about the Chandrian when the Chandrian came to kill him.
3. Thickets - Patrick Wolf
Well, have I been travelling so long
that I forgot how to stop?
Pale and deathly,
what have I become?
Again, Kvothe as he is in the "present".
4. Damaris - Patrick Wolf
Gypsy, stray,
bleak orphan,
No one could say
the land you came from.
Kvothe after his troupe is killed. He becomes a nameless begger in the streets, and even after he gets to the University, there's still a kind of seperateness between him and the others; no one really knows who he is and where he's from.
5. The Gypsy King - Patrick Wolf
I recall when I was younger
There was a fire
To travel the world
And shine with a passion.
But how do I get there?
What road to be choosing?
When the seasons so high
For losing.
He desperately wants to get to the University, but isn't sure how to make that happen, especially living on the streets.
6. Theseus - Patrick Wolf
How you gonna find your way out of the maze?
Here the jealous hand of bitter men
carve the meat before the table is laid.
And they are hungry, they are hungry for you,
and they are hungry, they are hungry for you,
With an appetite so insatiable,
They are hungry, they are hungry for you.
Life at the University and Kvothe's rivalry with Ambrose. Kvothe is so talented with his lute that the patrons where he plays love him, but Ambrose is so jealous that he seeks to destroy Kvothe.
7. Tristan
Forever young,
I come from God knows where,
'Cos now I’m here
Without a hope or care.
I am trouble
And I am troubled too.
Sorrow by name
And sorrow by nature
Working for joy
On overtime.
This song kind of makes me think of Kvothe's innate self throughout the novel.
8.Oblivion - Patrick Wolf
But oh, god, now here it comes
And it's too dark to aim this gun
And now faster, faster, faster
Once again I'm on the run
"O' my stubborn son
I know that you said
You need no one
But don't you see
Danger, danger, danger
Headed to oblivion..."
This reminds me of the Chandrian, in a way. Kvothe wants to learn about them and defeat them, but he's also afraid and it's dangerous to be poking his nose where it doesn't belong.
9. Overture - Patrick Wolf
It's wonderful what a smile can hide
If the teeth shine right and it's nice and wide
It's so magical what you can keep inside
And if you bury it deep no one can find a thing, no.
Now after all these years you are at last opening was it worth all that war just to win?
So caught up in the speed of the days in your sin.
Don't forget how the story begins.
This song is more Chronicler's view of Kvothe as he gets the story. He wants the whole story, the real story, but that's something Kvothe has been hiding for ages.
10. Chaconne For Solo Violin - Bach
[Instrumental]
I like the discourse of this song. It's a bit sad and dark, but at some points, lighter. It generally encompasses Kvothe's life.
11. Epilogue - Patrick Wolf
[Instrumental]
I think the general "plucky" feel and tone of the song reminds me of Kvothe.
See? I warned you; lots of Patrick Wolf.
