Review of Julius Papp @ Dante's

Okay, can I get a f*ck yeah?

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending Dante's for the first time. Apparently this club used to exist a few years ago, but after several key factors coming into play it has re-opened. The venue itself is a fabulous addition to our city; it holds onto a true St. Louis feel (it used to be an old firehouse) so it's all about high ceilings, brick, and thick arched glass windows. I loved the fact that there were two main rooms to co-mingle, co-habitate, co-experience.

My only complaint? The bathrooms.... the women's stalls were out of TP by 11:00 pm, there was no soap, and there was broken glass and trash on the floors by about 1 am. Ew!

Onto the DJ, lovies.

Sure, I've heard of Julius Papp but I've never witnessed one of his sets before. What can I say? The dude broke me off!

I love a DJ with good range and diverse selection. I was with a couple cats who had very different taste in music - one preferred trance and a harder, bangin' sound and the other preferred more soulful-funky-deep house. I like a multitude of genres - and Papp delivered.

He run the gamut, which is not what I was expecting a San Fran DJ to do. I was expecting a West Coast "polished" sound (haha, thanks for the verbiage Jon Hart) but he brought everything from glitchy to minimal, dark funk to deep and happy house. At the end of his set, he even threw down Marley's original 'Could You Be Loved' to settle us down / put us in a smile. (Thanks Jonathan Hensley for all your hard work LOL!)

I was impressed with the sound system, too. I just got back from Miami so I've been spoiled, but for our small proud scene, the speakers delivered.

Although I could've done without the drunk girls throwing water on the crowd, LMFAO!

Everyone clap for Papp! This guy was stellar!
