I think George Washington Carver would be proud.

A small but significant counter to the seemingly-endless stream of bad news:

Project Peanut Butter is a group which manufactures and distributes a peanut butter based food which has had a 90%+ success rate in treating severely malnourished children in Malawi and Sierra Leone.

The product they create, known as Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF)is highly nutritious, resistant to spoiling, can be administered by family members in the home (so avoiding dangerous and costly hospitalizations), and can be created domestically in the affected country with locally grown peanuts. The cost for ingredients for an ENTIRE course of treatment for one child is $15.

This represents a huge improvement in both effectiveness and cost on earlier forms of malnutrition treatment.

Good people, good science, good news.
