Zombies Run Fic: Diary: Runner 5

Yes I am writing fic for a fitness app. My sanity dissapeared a long time ago. Also if you never thought it possible for ship characters in a running app...WRONG.

Diary: Runner 5

I sometimes wonder how many of the runners like being called by their numbers. I’m sure if most people in the township thought about it for a moment they’d remember a name or two, but to most we are known only by number.

At dinner it’s ‘how’s it going Runner 5?’ or ‘Runner 5 - you were out by Canton today weren’t you?’ If they ever knew my name they probably didn’t believe it was my real one anyway.

I asked Nigel Kent how he felt and he showed me a small notebook that he kept under his pillow. A diary, which he let me read. The talk was mostly of his life before the outbreak, but he talked of day to day events. He snatched it away before I got to the most recent entries and I’m still not sure whether he was hiding secret information or whether he’d been writing about me.

I hope it’s the latter. No one has ever had a crush on me before.

Who is Nigel Kent? You know him better as Runner 13. No one else wanted the number. If it wasn’t already unlucky no one wants to be reminded of the year of the outbreak. But he always liked the number.

“Good things always happen to me on the 13th day of the month,” he explained. “Just two weeks ago I managed to pick up two bottles of Vodka on a run and the Major let me keep a bit of one.”

I remember. Nigel was everyone’s favourite person for a week. He let me have two shots of it - almost half.

“I miss being called by name sometimes,” he admitted. “That’s why I keep this diary. When something happens to me, I want someone to find it and remember that I had a story and a history too.”

He gave me ten sheets from his notebook so I could write something of my own. So here I am.

If anyone finds this then I’ve probably died out there.

And it’s Donna. My name is Donna.
