PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Jun 14, 2008 21:57

Friends, family, colleagues. HEED THIS WARNING. Do NOT, under ANY circumstances, go see The Happening. It is nothing like my beloved The Sixth Sense, Lady in the Water, or Signs. Every one of those is a good movie.

The Happening is gory and terrifying and never lets up. By the end, the audience was laughing desperately at anything we could, even odd facial expressions, because there was no humor whatsoever and we all really, really needed to laugh. Even Signs is funny during the scary parts, like when Joaquin Phoenix pwns with the baseball bat. And The Sixth Sense ends with a happy feeling that evil was just misunderstood in the first place. Lady in the Water is just so darn adorable that you can forgive it for being a little strange.

If you like movies where you're scared shitless the entire time and wishing the movie would end from the VERY FIRST SCENE, then go see The Happening. Otherwise, avoid it. Even if someday it's the only thing on television, then read a book rather than watching it. I wish fervently that I hadn't.

gah, movies, reviews
