Insta-thoughts on SPN 8.06 + CF 1.05

Will get around to finishing/posting the 8.05 & 8.06 recaps/commentaries sometime within the next few days--Diwali weekend is coming up, so I'll get to them in between the fireworks and hogging on my grandmother's cooking.

About Supernatural! Some quick thoughts. SPOILERS under the cut.

1. I thought the dialogue was a bit clumsy too. The more I study the craft of writing, the harder I am on TV shows, poor things.

2. Garth is okay in my book. I like that he's both dorky AND competent, in turns. It's his overt and natural kindness that allows him to shut Dean's cakehole for once.

2.45 I'm okay with this, too, and here's why: he's not just a Bobby-in-training, he's Garth. Pseudo-Bobby would be Information Central, and Garth would be the counselor. These two roles just happen to be squeezed into one character. InfoCentral is Garth's job; a strong sense of empathy and human nature is his innate gift. And because Sam and Dean were incommunicado for the past year, Garth helped himself to all Bobby's notes, though come to think of it, didn't Sam cull a bunch of those with Jodi's help, last season? Hmmm. Jodi would've made a kick-ass Bobby replacement.

2.458 AGREED.

2.75 Dean's high-school consisted of a GED. He paid no attention when he DID go, so this makes sense to me.

3. Yeeeeeah. This is just poor continuity on Show's part, all that "chase Kevin or not to chase Kevin" hooey. And as we see later in this episode, Sam does call Dean on his bullshit. What I really wanna see is an actual flashback of Sam losing it over Dean's disappearance. I think we need this, to truly feel for Sam's plight. So far, it's just words and a bit of over-reaction over hitting a dog. SHOW, DON'T TELL, WRITERS!

5.5 I'm liking Amelia more and more. That is all.

6. Okay, I'm gonna claim guilt, here. I have notes on a fic I was writing that circled around the Civil War and an unknown soldier. My ghosts weren't brothers on opposite sides but friends, yet it still paralleled the Winchester's situation, just not so blatantly. Show beat me to the punch, and then beat the theme into dogfood. Yeah, a bit ham-fisted.

7.) I do think it's odd how Ruby seldom comes up in conversation on Show. Is this some conscious decision to respect Jared and Gen, I wonder?

Anywho, I think I've blabbed enough! I love your reviews, though, so keep on truckin'. :D

I remember complaining about weird and clunky dialogue on Show once before, and then I find out the writer for that episode was Adam Glass, too. Huh.

(There are also a lot of interesting comparisons to be made between Defending Your Life and this one, though. Dean's mistakes were paraded in front of him and he was judged, while this time it was Sam's turn. Except, this time, it's his own brother that's judging him.)

Jodi would've made a kick-ass Bobby replacement.

OH GOD I FORGOT ABOUT JODI. Would LOVE to see her back. ♥

YES. There was just that one big flashback in s4, but it worked so much better because we really had a taste of just how LOST Sam was without Dean. Grieving, angry, reckless, suicidal--it made sense why Ruby was able to get through to him when he was that vulnerable. This season's series of flashbacks is giving us a lot of material, but so far has not helped us sympathise with Sam.

It's totally cool having stories that parallel the brothers' relationship--that's what Show does all the time, after all. :) But this time it was just so--like you said--ham-fisted.

Is this some conscious decision to respect Jared and Gen, I wonder?

I... don't know. I mean, Gen did show up on The French Mistake as herself (with the "you married fake RUBY?"--you can't get any more blatant than that).

I'm glad you're liking them! ♥
