I've had some unexpected time off recently, which, of course, I used to catch up on Doctor Who. And
while this season's been a tad... weird (still teetering on the line between whimsy and drama, a line that the show usually treads very well), the exit of the Ponds has kind of shattered my heart to pieces. Was positively blubbering at the end of The Angels Take Manhattan.
But! The new companion looks promising. Also, it's Dalek-girl from the first episode, which has made me go, "Eh, what?!" in all the good ways. Yay!
Recently I've also developed inordinate levels of attraction toward Jesse Spencer. Sure, he's pretty, but he's also Australian, he plays the violin, guitar, and the piano, comes from a family full of doctors (seeing as I do too, I empathise. He had the courage to buck the family business!), sings, surfs, and, well, pretty much ticks every box on the "things that turn emmram on" checklist.
So I decided to check out the pilot of his new show, Chicago Fire. It's... "earnest" is the first word that comes to mind. It's really not my kind of show. I don't care for procedurals, or for shows that "showcase the real lives for firefighters/doctors/lawyers/politicians/janitors/what-have-you". It took me ages and ages just to get around to watching House. I like my shows to be based off fantastical premises, with just a dash of reality to ground it. (Which is why I continued to watch House. It's medical fantasy--a genre in itself. It's rather delightful if you skip all the drama and just stick around for Laurie and the whacky medicine.)
But Chicago Fire seems pretty dedicated to keeping things real--that seems to be its USP, really. Which is fine--the characters are okay, the drama has been done a million times before but is solid enough to work, and there is a lot of Jesse Spencer. That last bit's important.
..... Yep. *big goofy grin*
Oh, and also, the picture that launched a thousand slash fics:
Hell, even I'm tempted.
