...Not been keeping track of anything online, really--outside of watching a handful of House MD episodes from my hostel-mates (seriously, how did I not know that show is so popular among my friends?) and reading a handful of House fanfics, I've been blissfully unaware of the world outside the hospital.
House is... well. It's awesome when it's fun. It's so far removed from reality that it's this lovely little universe existing in a vacuum, and when it deigns to follow its own rules, it's excellent. It's when it attempts melodrama that it falls painfully flat (seriously, who gives a shit about House's love-life?).
As for the fics, it's... interesting. I gravitate toward Chase, because, hey. The accent. (Also he reminds me of this Australian med student I had a HUGE crush on when I attended an East Asian Medical Students conference a couple of years ago, but that's a story for another day.) Besides, he's the character I dislike the least. It's part of the allure of the show, at least in the beginning--all of the characters are jerks, whether outright or hidden, and it lends a sort of realism to proceedings and allows for wonderful understated drama (again, in the first few seasons). A lot of the fanfics I've read, however, try to turn general dickishness from the characters into some great melodrama, full of hidden motives and terrible angst. Chase hating overweight people is not him being a jerk, but because of his hitherto-unmentioned anorexia! He's not just laidback and smug--he's depressed and in desperate need of help! I mean, I'm not saying that people can't explore those possibilities and make it compelling--it's just that it's accepted in fandom that that's what Chase is. Fanon!Chase bears no resemblance to canon!Chase.
It kinda reminds me of Castiel--there's a fanon!Castiel that I find rather different from the character I see on the show. And while I've never quite bothered to write something from Castiel's pov (Ok, except for
that one time), I've started a fic from Chase's. It's been stuck on 200 words for the past 10 days, but at least it gives me something to think about when my insomnia gets really bad. I don't think I'll be writing anything in SPN for a while. I've lost much of my enthusiasm and liking for Show, and while I'll be sticking around for s8, my SPN muse is pretty much dead for now.
Anyway. Recs! These fics kind of made me want to hunt the authors down and give them giant hugs, or hell, at least chocolate cake, because these are not just good--they're instant day-brighteners. I renounce angst for comedy! And mystery and plot and just--great dialogue. How do people write such great banter?
The One With The British Doctor by
Roga It's a crossover between House MD and Friends, based off a cameo by Hugh Laurie in a Friends episode. It's about the funniest goddamn thing you'll read this week. I recommend everything written by this author, really.
Safe From Harm by
Maya TawiSomeone's killing one of House's patients, and solving the medical mystery could put his own life in danger.
Awesomely written, full of snarky, lovely dialogue, mystery, adventure, and enjoyable House-Chase interaction.
The Long Count by
enigma731House's team is called upon by a CDC task force investigating a deadly viral outbreak. But pathogens are the least of Chase's concerns.
This is a long, lovely fic with an interesting medical mystery at its core. It does tend to lay the angst and heartbreak on a little thick (and the sex scenes are repetitive), but the prose for the most part is excellent and the plot is engaging.
