well it's gotten better since the 19th century. we've improved 'assimilation'
but now all Natives have their own schools, including Hawaiians and Inuits
even Blacks have their own schools and colleges
it is advisable to instruct kiddos about not just their american roots, but their own lineage... which is usually done by their parentals and lolos/lolas
for Filipinos we have our own cultural centers, especially in Virginia Beach, VA... where we instruct the language, customs, traditions including dance and song
it's advisable for parentals of immigrant kiddos to teach them your native tongue, customs, and ways... my parentals started taking me and my little brother to the PI when my brother was only 3...
although I watched a lot of American programming, I am also fluent in bisaya, semi-fluent in tagalog and have been watching PI programming since I am about 7.
Yes, don't let the tablet or the tv be your kiddo's babysitter. take the time to instruct your kiddo in healthy and conducive pursuits...
assimilation is encouraged but not at the expense of one's cultural and tribe's identity
I suggested to the PI that the academy I'm going to start there is called the "Selena + Maria Makiling Academy"
I assimilated alright because I'm a certain mix and NYC allowed those like me to nurture their cultural and native identities... I learned about native americans at both Aloysius Academy and CUNY-Staten island
