"Hello?"
"Hey, it's me." Me? Don't be presumptuous. You've just been dating for a week. "Matt. It's... Matt." He ran a hand through his hair. "How are you?"
She hadn't been on set for a few days, busy with other projects, and their respective schedules had been relentless, therefore after their talk and dinner at her house they had repeatedly missed each other: the time had however given him some time to think, and he had realized there was something he needed to do.
"Well hello there, stranger." She grinned. "How have you been in the past... hmmm... Four days?"
He felt his ears go red with shame. "Good, good. Sorry about that, hours on set have been... Well you know." He chuckled nervously. "I've missed you..."
His voice turned soft at the last sentence, and she felt her chest swell. "Me too..."
"Are you free tomorrow night? You know... For a date. With me." No, with your neighbor, you idiot. He sat down. Why was he so nervous all of a sudden? As if he'd never asked a girl out before. Relax, dude. She likes you, she's made it very clear by sleeping with you twice.
She giggled, his nervousness obvious in his tone. "Let me check... Yes, I'm free tomorrow."
"Oh! Cool! That's cool. So I could come pick you up at about seven? Sounds good?"
"Yeah, sounds good. Where are you taking me?"
"Not telling you. That's a surprise."
"Aww, come on! At least give me a hint so I know how to dress."
"Hmmm, whatever you wear you'll look amazing in it." He exhaled a breath. "So, tomorrow night? Seven?"
"Well, I've never gone on a date without knowing any detail, but okay. I trust you."
She trusts you! "I promise you won't regret it." He got up as he was called into dance rehearsals. "See you tomorrow?"
"See you tomorrow, Mr Morrison."
"See you tomorrow, Miss Mays."

He pulled up right outside her house, thankful she had opened the gate for him, the last thing they needed were pictures on gossip magazines. He checked himself out in the back mirror one last time, grinning widely to check his teeth, and then got the flowers from the passenger's seat, and with a deep breath, got out and rang the bell.
She was right in the hall, but allowed herself a minute before getting the door, and when she did, she had to work hard not to drool on the welcome mat. Dark wash jeans, white fitting shirt, black leather jacket, he looked incredible.
He shyly handed her the flowers, leaned closer and with a "You look beautiful.", kissed her cheek twice. She blushed, thanking him for the flowers. They stood in the hall briefly as she found a vase for the bunch, and then he led her out, and held the passenger's door of his car open for her.
He had thought long about this, and wanted to give her a perfect date. The kind they didn't have right at the beginning. Matt considered himself to be a romantic guy. He liked to take his girl out on dates, make her feel special, take long strolls together, kiss her goodnight at her doorstep. And then, sure, at some point, have sex until neither could feel their legs. The sooner, the better. But he liked to do things right, particularly if he liked the woman in question. And he wasn't sure about many things, but he knew he really liked Jayma. A lot.
"So, will you tell me where you're taking me now?"
He chuckled. "I guess so." His gaze dropped to her legs, bared by the very short skirt she had selected for the night. He lost his focus for a moment, thinking of the velvety texture of her skin, but then he blinked several times, and got back on track. "Well. You know I went to an arts school not far from here, right?"
She nodded. "The one in the OC?"
"Yep." She remembers. "Well, the director, Dr Ralph, is still one of my closest friends and first mentor. They're having the opening night of their yearly musical, and since this year it's Hairspray, the kids really wanted me to be there. I figured we could go... I mean, if you want of course." He turned to study her face at a red light. "We can do anything you want. Really. Just so you know, it's kind of family there for me, so no pictures unless asked beforehand, no gossips, I doubt people will even care we're there. They're there to see their kids perform."
He had read her mind. She relaxed immediately, and laid her left hand on his right. "I'd love to see Hairspray. Let's go back to school, Link."
-----
The show had been incredibly entertaining, and she had caught Matt mouthing the words to the songs more than once, smiling indulgently at the kids and their sometimes still raw performances. He's going to be a great father someday.
At the end, when everyone was giving the performers their well-deserved standing ovation, he had taken her hand, and had led her backstage, to where the school director was waving for them. They shook hands with the teachers and made small talk, until a very nervous Matt introduced her to his first and most important mentor, his hands sweaty and his heart racing, he really wanted and needed Jayma and Ralph to get on well.
Luckily for him, within seconds his former teacher looked completely charmed by his date, and after a few minutes of relaxed, comfortable talking, Ralph gestured for them to enter his office, where he got a DVD out of a bookshelf.
"This", he hinted at the disk in his hands, "is a collection of all of Matt's performances at this school. We had it done after he became a super mega star." He elbowed Matt and chuckled when his former student blushed violently. "I was supposed to give a copy to him ages ago, but we haven't seen in a while." He handed it to Jayma. "I have the feeling you might like this, Jayma..."
She gasped, and took the DVD with a wicked grin. "Thank you so much, Dr. Ralph. I would definitely love to watch this."
He smiled at them, and shook their hands. "I have to go now, but if you guys wanna leave undercover you can go out this way" He turned back to them. "Jayma, it's been a real pleasure to meet you, I hope we'll see again very soon."
"The pleasure was mine, Matt's always spoken so highly of you."
"Don't believe a word." He grinned and turned to his former pupil, whom he hugged goodbye. "See you soon, Matt. Thank you so much for coming, the kids were thrilled. And..." He looked sideways at Jayma. "We'll talk, right?"
Matt chuckled. "We will. Thank you for inviting us, I loved this. See you soon, Ralph."
They quickly left the school from the hall the principal had suggested them, and in few seconds were out and at Matt's car.
"So, what do you think? They were good!"
"They were great! It was so amazing to be surrounded by such an energy." She took his hand, and laced their fingers. "Thank you so much for bringing me tonight, Matty. I know how much being here means to you."
He looked down for a second, embarrassed, but then looked at her, and leaned closer to kiss her softly. "You're very welcome. I'm glad you liked it." He laid his lips on hers once more, and then placed his hands on her waist. "Are you hungry? I know a great sushi place not far from here, if you want."
"I'm starving. Let's go."
-----
"After you." He held the door open for her as they exited the cozy restaurant, and smiled at the blush that crept on her cheeks.
"Thank you." She turned, waiting for him, and held out a hand for him to take. "Dinner was great." She stood on her toes and kissed his jaw.
There was something different to the mood of the night, compared to their previous encounters. True, one had been in a trailer on set, and the other two, at her place, had been little short than opening acts for make-out sessions or sex, but this... this was different. She couldn't quite place her finger on what was going on, but she could clearly feel it. They had spent their time, while enjoying their food, engaged in long talks, Matt telling her stories from his childhood and high school times, inquiring about her own experiences, and before long, she had found herself fascinated by his charming and honest ways, the lopsided grin he bashfully used to deflect attention from himself, the way his hand automatically ran through his hair whenever he felt embarrassed. He was adorable.
"What do you wanna do now?" He squeezed her hand as he noticed she was lost in thoughts. "Jay?"
"Hm?" She whipped her head towards him when she realized she had been caught unfocused, and smiled. "Sorry. I was just... thinking."
"No problem. I was just wondering what you wanted to do now." He lifted their hands to his lips, and kissed her knuckles gently. "Want to come to my place? There are still a few embarrassing stories you haven't heard yet."
She giggled. "A few hundred stories, I suppose?" She smiled. "I would like that, yeah."
"Perfect." He walked her to his car and opened her door. "Shall we?"
She grinned, and kissed his cheek. "We shall."
-----
"Thank you." She took the glass of red wine he had brought from the kitchen along with one for himself, and held out the DVD to him. "I was thinking we could watch this, Ralph's been so nice making a copy for you."
"Well." His ears had turned purple. "You see, I am not sure you're ready for this. I am pretty sure there's a clip of me dressed as Snoopy in there. I would still like to keep some little credibility with you, you know."
"And you think that is a good argument to dissuade me from wanting to see that?? Come on Snoopy!!" She burst into laughter, and got up, walking to his DVD player. "Let's see how this works..."
He laid his glass on a coffee table, and walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. "Is there anything I can do to stop you? Hm?" He slowly kissed her neck, rubbing her sides gently.
"Hmmmm." She tilted her head to give him some more room to work. "I really don't think so... Come on, show me how does this thing work?"
He mockingly huffed, and then loaded the disk in the player, and led her back on the couch, bringing her down to his lap, his face in her neck, his arm around her waist. She smiled softly, and leaned back against his chest.
-----
"Well that was great! I'm warning you, I'll want to watch this every other week from now on." She giggled and took his face in her hands, pecking his lips. "Snoopy."
"Ouch. Low blow." He mimicked being punched in the guts.
She grinned, caressing his cheek, and then glanced at the clock on the mantelpiece. "Oh my goodness, I hadn't realized it was so late!"
He pulled back a little, and looked at her. "Don't go. I mean," he took a breath. "If you really want, I'll drive you home right at this moment. I'll do anything you want. But tonight has been so special to me, so... magical. It's been the first date we've never really had." He took a strand of red hair in his thumb and index finger and twisted them softly, feeling the silky texture.
"Shouldn't a first date end with a goodnight kiss on the girl's doorstep, then?" She smiled, the candlelight flickering on her features.
"I guess, but we haven't exactly respected dating etiquettes so far..." He smiled, mostly to himself. "I just wanted to show you I can be a nice, romantic guy, and that I really, really like you." He kissed her gently. "I know you're putting a lot at stake here, Jay... I just want you to know, you won't regret it."
She stared for a long moment, and then kissed him, deep and meaningful. "I already knew all of that, even before tonight. This..." she gestured around. "Tonight was just a confirmation."
"Then stay, please. You can sleep in a shirt of mine, and I have a brand-new pink toothbrush waiting for you." He took her hands. "I just... I want to go to bed knowing I can roll over and feel you right beside me."
She blushed, and lowered her eyes to her lap. "Matt..."
"Please, Jay. We've rushed things enough, as beautiful as that's been. Let's take it slow tonight. Let me just hold you all night." He cupped her face. "Please."
She smiled, and looked up at him. "You said the toothbrush is pink?"
"Hot pink. With little fake diamonds all over it." He laughed. "It's the most hideous thing I've ever seen, and I needed to share that with you."
She burst into laughter, and then shifted off his lap, taking his hand as she got up. "Well. Thank you for that, Matty." She turned around, and nodded to him. "Come on. Lead the way."
