Alot of people believe (or want to believe) alot of weird things about nutrition. So in my quest to set the world straight on matters of nutrition (and not get all grumpy when they think of healthy eating), here is a quiz

Fact or Myth?

1. Calories eaten at night are more fattening.

2. Fasting helps rid the body of toxins.

3. Skipping breakfast helps ( Read more... )

I got three wrong I think. My biggest hang up is the eating late at night. It's true, though, calories eaten whenever still count as calories. But I try to avoid eating late at night, because it helps me avoid some stomach issues, and I actually sleep better, instead of sleeping while digesting food.

So I'm gonna keep plugging the "eat light or nothing after 8pm" thing. But it's not like you can gorge until then either, which makes life less enjoyable for someone like me. :)

And people NEED to eat proper breakfasts!

(Oy rant) The breakfasts we've designed for ourselves are pathetic. They're mostly comprised of starch, when we need the proper mix of protein, fat, sugar, fiber, and whatever the heck comes out of vegetables to not feel wiped out and ready to gorge by noon. Cereal doesn't cut it. And where's the vegatables in your average eggs/sausage/pancake breakfast? (/Oy rant)

I heard about the frozen vegetable thing. I've heard it applies to canned vegetables, too. It's good news, because they tend to be a LOT cheaper than the fresh vegetables. They don't taste as good, though, which is probably why they're healthier.

I'm so glad someone likes nutrition!!!! I never get to talk about the stuff i learn because i always think people dont like to hear it, or they think im just gonna tell them to only eat vegetables.

I agree with you about the late eating thing (although i eat late on the days im gone all day). I wrote about it below to dorothy.

I have rants about breakfast too!! It seems like among girls(women even), that its 'cool' not to eat breakfast (and im not just talking teenage girls). But you shouldnt skip meals for two reasons 1.) you are just going to eat more at some point in the day (i dont care what anyone says, they will), and 2.) your body needs nutrients to function, and cutting out a meal cuts out a big percentage of those. And if you are one of those people who says you will get sick if you eat in the morning. Start eating just a little bit and work your way up. I was the same way too but i just sucked it up and now im fine.

i think frozen and canned (a little more so canned) have marginally less nutrients ( the more it strays from its origional, uncut form, the more nutrients lost) but i dont htink its that big of a difference. the only thing i could thnk of is vitamin C is really sensitive, so i dont know how it would react to the acidity of the can, and im not sure how it would be flash frozen.

It is a fad to not eat breakfast. Down with the conformists!

I'm still not sure what to think of frozen and canned veggies, either. They don't taste as good, and they tend to have sodium added to preserve them. (More on that below.) Fresh vegetables are more fun to work with but also more expensive. The best fresh fruits or vegetables are straight from the garden. I go insane over fresh tomatoes.

Now the whole sodium thing. I don't react well to sodium, so I know I need to cut down. But a good definition of hell is a low sodium diet. We seem to "pickle" just about everything these days, only it's not quite to that extreme. But everything we buy is manipulated to last longer than it normally would, and it usually has quite a bit of sodium in it.

I worked with a client who was on a low sodium diet, and there was very little he could eat. He didn't even enjoy eating because everything was so bland. There are other spices besides salt, but they don't really come through in the food without the salt to bring out the taste.

I hate these stupid diets and 'break-through scientific research' that pops up every other day. It makes people hate nutrition even more.

I would hate to be on any kind of stupid diet. I cant even avoid milk, I cant imagine having to stay away from sodium. I dont want to imagine it. I hate that everything is manipulated. We try to 'improve' everything and it ends up just being worse. Heart disease is the number one killer in america, diet is a HUGE factor in heart health, but at least we are making dinner faster...
we can spend hours in the gym, or thousands of dollars on plastic surgery, but spending a little more time and money on food is out of the question, as long as we look good it doesnt matter whats going on on the inside at the moment or in years to come.

thanks for listening to my rants! i like listening to yours
