The Assassin (Nie Yin Niang), directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien
(Taiwan)
In Competition
Synopsis:
A female assassin begins to question her loyalties when she falls in love with a man she's supposed to kill. Set during the mighty Tang Dynasty-period in China. Starring Shu Qi, Chang Chen.
This is the director's first martial arts film ever, and also his first film since Flight of the Red Balloon, which opened Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard in 2007. He has also had films in competition 7 times so far. Personally, I can't wait to see what he has been able to do with this film, even though the plot seems a bit "been there, done that". Still, I'm anticipating a great reception.
