It's probably all in the mind - a Life on Mars picspam

I watched the first episode of Ashes to Ashes yesterday but I don't really feel like commenting on it - however I was inspired to do this, a Life on Mars picspam about why you should watch this serously amazing show.

The story:
Life on Mars is a 16 episodes series (2 seasons of 8 episodes each) from the BBC. It's about the Manchester police Sam Tyler who has an accident that brings him 30 years back in time. The question is, is he really back in time or is everything around him just a creation of his own imagination while he lays in a coma somewhere in a hospital in present time? Or maybe he's just crazy, because he keeps seeing things in the TV that aren't really there, he hears voices and gets strange phone calls... And either way, how can he get home? While trying to figure out the answer to that question Sam is stuck in the '70s, working at the same police station as he did in the future, each week trying to solve a new crime without all the helpful technology he's used to and with the help of his new colleagues.

The Characters:

Sam Tyler (played by John Simm)
When the series begin Sam Tyler works as a DCI with the Manchester police in 2006. Everything changes when Sam gets hit by a car and wakes up in 1973. Is he mad, in a coma or back in time? If Sam can work out the reason he’s in 1973 maybe he will find his way home.

Gene Hunt (played by Philip Glenister)
DCI Gene Hunt is Sam’s boss when he starts working with the Manchester police in 1973. He’s the guy you love to hate or hate to love - it’s up to you really. Mostly you just love him because you may get annoyed with him and think he’s doing a bad thing but his heart is always in the right place.

Annie Cartwright (played by Liz White)
At a police station where the majority of the staff is male Annie is one of the few females. She helps Sam adjust to life in 1973 and she’s always there when he needs someone to talk to. She offers him sympathy and she’s the only one Sam really talks to about his thoughts and feelings about what happened to him.

Ray Carling (played by Dean Andrews)
If Sam hadn’t shown up Ray would have been promoted. That’s why he doesn’t like Sam and often blames Sam when things go wrong. In trying to get the promotion he’s after he only ends up making more trouble for himself but in the end he’ll always be there for the team when needed.

Chris Skelton (played by Marshall Lancaster)
If something goes wrong, Chris is probably to blame. He’s a little slow and clumsy sometimes but very funny totally adorkable. He mostly gets to do the job no one else wants but he’s not complaining. Unlike Ray he actually likes Sam and his different view on how poliece work should be handeled.

Life on Mars is one of my favourite shows ever. It's truly original and very close to perfection if you ask me. It's a drama with a lot of humor and some small sci-fi influences. It can be both very funny and sad or serious but mostly it will just leave you speechless, because it's that good. I'm sure many of you on my flist would love it just as much as I do if you decided to watch it! So what are you waiting for? Go watch Life on Mars (and make sure it's the BBC one and not that stupid American re-make) and then come back and thank me later! ;)
