YAY! So I definitely got to meet David Sedaris not once, but TWICE today! It was WONDERFUL.

It's funny because as much as I have tried to picture his voice coming out of his face, I can never do it. For some reason I couldn't wrap my mind around it and even after two readings today and some light conversation, I still can't really get it.

He is an AMAZING guy though. He signed every single last one of the books that came his way at both signings. Not every person would do that. AND he chatted with just about everyone individually asking them about family and where they live and whatever they wanted to talk about.

Soooooo...

I took the 10 o'clock train in this morning and called Borders to see if they still had tickets left for the signing. They did, so after wandering around for a bit I headed over to find out that I had to purchase the book in their store to get it signed. So I now have two copies of DS' new book. I sat on the floor for the Borders reading and sliced my hand open. I fell in love with the help desk guy.

ANYWAY, David came out at about 12:45 because he was running late from the radio station. He read 'Ship Shape' which is one of my favorites from the new book (who am I kidding, most of them are favorites). He talked a little bit (favorite line: I usually write 3 minutes of bullshit in the book but due to the amount of people, I'm going to write your name, a space and then my name and you can fill the bullshit in yourself.) Then at 1:15pm they lined us up for the signing. I get up to his desk at about 2:50pm and this was our conversation:

DS: "Emily. Are you Emily?"
Me: "Yes, I am" in a dumbass sort of weird school girl who has a crush on her 4th grade teacher way.
DS: "Have we met before?"
Me: "No, but I will be at Brookline later tonight."
DS: "Oh! Are you? I'm gonna read something different but part of it might be the same."
Me: "Can I ask you a question?"
DS: *nods*
Me: "In your audio stuff, is that really you doing that Billie Holiday voice?"
DS: "Yes."
Me: "Wow. That's amazing."
DS: *laughs* "Thanks."

I get scared and run out of the store.

So then later on I show up to Brookline Booksmith at 5pm and the line for the signing was huge. While I was unable to get a ticket to attend the reading downstairs, we were permitted to listen through a sound system upstairs. This time he read, 'Baby Einstein' which is also hilarious and great to hear him read. Then he talked and read from his own journal because he gets 'bored' with his book stuff. The journal stuff was claaassic. He took questions from the kids downstairs and then, although it was not scheduled, he did a signing for EVERYONE, even those of us who did not have a ticket, for those of us who did not even buy the book. The line was through the bookstore and out the door and down the street. I am like 99.9% sure that he stayed to sign every book, he said he was going to be there until very late. So then I got up to him this time at like 9:00pm and our convo went like this!

Me: "Since you already signed my book today, can you just sign this piece of paper so I can put it in a scrapbook."
DS: "So you were at Borders today."
Me: "Yeah, I'm the one who asked you about Billie Holi..."
DS: "Ahhhh, yes. I must look a lot older now."
Me: "Yeah. It was taxing enough just to get to both signings, I can't imagine having to actually DO the signing and readings day in day out."
DS: "Yeah, yup." nodding as he signs the paper, "To Emily, So very nice to see you again."
Me: "We really do appreciate this."
DS: "Thank you, thank you."

Now, I don't know what's wrong with me. I HATE smoking. I think it's disgusting and I can't date people who do it. HOWEVER, for some reason I think it's hot when celebrities do it. Maybe it's because I put them on a pedestal where the rules of emphysema don't apply. I dunno but whenever old Hollywood is smoking, I'm all about it. Where am I going with this? Well, at the Brookline signing he lit up right before I got there. (He also said anyone who smoked could go to the front of the line if they had a pack of cigs on them because they get treated so poorly.) Because it was DS, I was like "Ohhhh DS, you're so silly."

So now I'm wicked sleepy and need to go to bed. I have to work tomorrow and return a copy of this book to Borders because I had him sign my B&N copy secretly. BWAHAHAHA!

Wait, am I allowed to return a Borders book to a different Borders store than where it was purchased?

Ahhhh man! Today was AWWWWEEESSSSOOOOMMMMMEEEE.
