The White Cliffs Of Dover

I was inspired to visit Dover after seeing Facebook photos of the famous white cliffs. So on a balmy Sunday, we took a high speed train to Dover from Kings Cross St Pancras.

It was refreshing to see wide open spaces and the views got even better when we were greeted by the English Channel. With the sun out, it looked reef-blue and crystal clear.

We walked for ages around Dover castle to get to the white cliffs and foraged on route. The hedgerows were full of blackberries, damsons, crab apples and sloe berries. It was childhood dream come true as we picked and popped blackberries into our mouths. Just like in an Enid Blyton story!

The cliffs were indeed scenic and on sunny days, they practically glow. Not as pretty but just as fascinating was the massive port where ships shuttle between Dover to Calais. I watched what seemed to be hundreds of cars and cargo trucks from Europe drive out of a ship.

How incredible is it that a different country is so close. No wonder people swim across the English Channel for kicks!

Calais is roughly 21 miles (or 33 kms) away and we could even see it's shoreline from Dover. Similar white cliffs were visible in the distance. *waves hello to France*

Wild blackberry bushes laden with small plump fruit.

These blackberries are much sweeter than the storebought kind. Plus it's more fun picking my own. Yum!

Rambling through the countryside, looking for the elusive white cliffs.

Just had my hair chemically straightened so I could'nt get it wet. And I don't like the looks of those rainclouds!

The magnificent Dover castle.

Ahoy, white cliffs ahead! (There really white because they're mostly made of chalk.)

Sharing a postcard moment.
