It's the case; it has to be. Colby doesn't have nightmares about his FBI work, not since he gave up his side job as a spy. He still has the odd wake in a sweat left over from Afghanistan though. These? These nightmares are different.

It's not just kids, its scouts. Colby loved being a scout. Scouting was part of what made a boy ready for the military as a man his father used to say, repeating his grandfather's words.

Colby even loved his scout leader. Mr. Crane was a community leader, a fixture on the baseball field where his son Lonnie was the pitcher and he always sat his family up in the front pews at church on Sunday.

So these dreams that feel so vivid, so visceral, they're more like flashes from a past he doesn't remember?

They can't be real. He can't imagine Mr. Crane doing anything like that to him or to the other boys, especially not his own son.

So why does he remember what color the quilt was in Mr. Crane's bedroom out in the remote Crane family cabin?

Why does he taste cheap wine on his tongue when he wakes from being twelve again?

The doubt wins out. The next weekend Colby catches up with old school friends on the phone, dropping leading questions to feel them out. They remember a trip to the cabin. They recall stealing sips from a dusty wine bottle found in the cabin's kitchen. What they don't recall is anything untoward.

Colby thinks he might just sleep again, until his final phone call. A chill sends icy fear in his veins when the voice on the other end of the line says that Lonnie Crane doesn't live there anymore.

He killed himself up at the Crane family cabin.
