051. Water
They moved silently through the water, darkness and the reeds at the lake's edge hiding them from view.
Jonas stopped to check their progress and the rest of the team paused behind him, trusting his judgment to know when it was safe to move.
He signaled that the target was in sight.
The tension in the group immediately went up a notch.
Slowly they slipped from the water, one by one making for the trees as they took turns covering each other's exit.
As they approached the compound, they finally got a look at how many guards they were up against.
Jonas gestured to Hector and Charles and they took off to carry out their portion of the plan.
Bob pointed to a high vantage point where he could set up his sniper rifle. Jonas nodded his approval before he and Mack headed for the compound.
They got close to the main gate without being detected, but there was a large group of guards just hanging around, sharing cigarettes. There were too many for Bob to take out with his rifle and too many for Jonas and Mack to take on by themselves.
Jonas looked up to the heavens and asked for a way.
Five minutes later the heavens opened and the guards ran indoors to escape the sudden downpour.
Already all wet, Mack and Jonas shared a glance and a bit of a grin.
How could they go wrong when even Nature was on their side?
052. Fire
Three... Two... One...
Jonas could always rely on his team. He could bet his life on them and often did.
The explosions went off perfectly, covering the escape of the prisoners they had been sent to rescue.
The guards would likely find the false trail they had planted at the lake and wouldn't be looking for them on their way to higher ground.
The towering flames now engulfing the compound were cause for concern though. The bright light of the fire lit up the night as the wooden structures were quickly consumed. It illuminated the group's progress up the mountain despite the dense vegetation around them.
The rain was no match for the heavily fueled blaze, but at least it helped cover the noise of dozens of footsteps.
Jonas hoped it would also help cover the sound of rotors as the helicopters neared their location. They could only keep their escape route secret so long before they were discovered.
An explosion in the compound behind them rained down sparks and debris over them. Jonas didn't flinch. He had figured once the flames hit their armory there would be fireworks. The prisoners, already frightened, had nearly panicked as they frantically patted the sparks that threatened to catch their clothing on fire.
One pointed to Jonas' shoulder with a trembling hand, obediently remembering Jonas' and Mack's admonitions to stay silent.
Jonas glanced down and saw a spark had turned into a tiny flame.
He brushed it aside and kept moving.
People were relying on him.
Lives were at stake.
He had no time to fight fires.
053. Earth
There is a time to fight, a time to run and a time to hide.
A soldier wants to fight.
A smart soldier knows when each of these options is a wise choice.
Jonas poked his head out of the ditch they were hiding in. He could see the flames below lighting up the group of guards heading their way. He watched them fall one by one as Bob's sniper rifle took them out, but even he only had so long before they discovered his position.
Jonas signaled to Mack who relayed the signal down the ditch to Charles and Hector.
When the first bullet hit the grassy mound behind them, they were ready.
Force met force - the many against the few.
The many didn't stand a chance.
Jonas and his team stood their ground and held the guards back as the helicopters came in to land behind them.
A loud noise erupted and they were showered with dirt.
The enemy fire halted temporarily. Bob's aim had been true as always.
He had limited ammunition for his rocket propelled grenade launcher, but Bob had only needed one to hit his mark and buy them some time.
Jonas looked down the length of the ditch. Seventeen dirty frightened faces and three determined ones met his gaze.
He nodded to them, reassuring the prisoners with his silent strength and confidence.
His team needed no reassurance.
His was the first foot on the grass and he knew his would be the last to leave it.
054. Air
Angels come down from heaven.
It was no accident that Jonas' helicopter's code name was AngelFlight.
The first helicopter, the equally aptly named AngelWings, had taken off already - Mack in command directing the pilot to Bob's location so he could be picked up on their way out.
Jonas quickly loaded the last of the prisoners as Charles and Hector covered them, bullets flying all around them.
A blast of air hit them as the last of Bob's grenades hit the edge of the field they were in.
Jonas called to Charles and Hector and they climbed on board, keeping watch as they did in case any of the remaining guards recovered fast enough to start firing again.
Jonas motioned to the pilot to lift off, even though he was still standing on the skid just outside the cabin door. He held on to the open door as they rose into the sky, a rush of cool night wind hitting his face.
Two guards on the far side of the field below raised their guns, aiming at the retreating helicopter, but Jonas was ready. Both fell before they could get a single shot off.
Finally airborne and out of enemy range, Jonas took the hand Hector proffered and let himself be pulled inside the chopper.
The jungle was swallowed up by the night behind them and Jonas could see AngelWings returning from Bob's location, changing course to join them for their trip back.
Their work was done.
It was time to fly away home.
