Peter stood hanging onto a strap on the subway, watching the stops go by until the one he and Neal wanted came up.

Neal exited the subway on Broadway between W 109th and W 110th, Peter right behind him.

They walked without speaking to the corner at W 110th and stood there, masses of New Yorkers flowing around them.

"It's official as of noon, right?" Neal asked, an uncharacteristic waver of uncertainty in his voice.

"How many times..." Peter stopped himself, drawing a breath to increase his patience. "Yes, Neal. As of noon today."

Neal's gaze shifted to the nearby church, ignoring the grumblings of the people who had to adjust their path to get around him.

As if on cue, the bells began to ring. As the clock chimed the hour Peter could see Neal counting silently along.

At the toll of eight, Peter got his keys out. At tenth bell he crouched down.

As soon as the twelfth bell faded he unlocked Neal's anklet and took it off, slipping it into his pocket with his keys.

The traffic light turned green a few seconds later and Neal practically ran across the once forbidden intersection - his former 2 mile boundary in the city, the one he could not cross.

As Peter caught up to him on the other side he spotted Elizabeth waiting for them outside the restaurant they'd chosen for this momentous occasion.

"I'm so happy for you, Neal," she told him, holding out her arms to hug him.

He accepted her hug warmly and Peter clapped him on the back, feeling oddly proud.

Four years, with time off for good behavior. Years of putting being a thief and a conman behind him to help land some really dangerous criminals behind bars.

"Congratulations. You're a free man now."
