After three days on the road, Billy pulled up in front of his aunt's house, smiling when he saw Cody come bounding out the front door, exuberant as always at his return.
"Hey boy! Did you miss me?"
Cody licked his chin as Billy petted him, his tail wagging so hard it wagged most of his body.
"How was he?" Billy asked as Amelia stood watching their reunion.
"Same as always. He pines at the window as soon as you drive away." She gave him a wistful smile. "He's lonely. An old lady's not the best company for such an active dog."
8:00PM
"Jeez, where'd that crazy rain come from?" Billy mused as he glanced out the kitchen window.
He turned when Cody scratched at the back door to be let out.
"Seriously? You had all day and now you want to go out?" He shook his head, but opened the door to let the black dog disappear into the night. He didn't have a fence around his yard, but Cody wouldn't run away.
9:00PM
Billy kept picking up his keys and putting them down. It was idiotic to go looking for a black dog in this weather. Still, Cody had never been gone so long.
A noise at the back door had him bolting to open it.
Cody stood on the back porch completely soaked holding a sodden gray kitten in his mouth, looking up at Billy with those same big brown beseeching eyes as when they first met.
"A cat? Oh, you've got to be kidding!"
10:00PM
After a trip to the bathtub for a wash, Cody and the kitten were curled up together on the rug, snuggled in close and sound asleep.
Billy watched them with a resigned sigh.
"I guess I have a cat now."
