Neal rarely fidgeted, but the anxious tension in his body vibrated with such ferocity he could barely sit still in the booth. Then again, waiting for a visit from the Russian mob wasn't a relaxing affair.
Two men walked through the door and even though Neal had never seen them before he knew instantly that they were there to meet him. Few men filled up a doorway like a Russian thug or had as many tell-tale weapon lumps under their coats.
They slid into the booth opposite him, gesturing to the bartender for two drafts and then waiting until they were delivered and paid for before one man spoke.
"It is done."
"As we agreed?" Neal asked. "You didn't kill him, right? You handed him over to the Feds?"
"Afterwards we did," the man said with a malicious little smirk. "At the hospital. But yes, Keller lives."
He nodded to his companion who pulled something from his pocket and passed it across the table in a napkin to Neal.
"This, I believe, is yours." Neal opened up the napkin to find the 2.5 million dollar ring he used to ransom Peter's safety from Matthew. "We already recovered more than enough assets to cover Keller's debt. Consider that your finder's fee."
"But all I did was tell you he was following me so you could look for him nearby."
"That was enough." The man took a drink of his beer, pushed it aside and rose with his companion following suit. "Our business is finished."
As he watched them leave Neal melted into his seat, relief flooding his body as he slumped back against the booth.
Now all he had to do was deal with being a wanted fugitive with Agent Cooper so hot on his trail he could almost feel him watching.
