"Your hair looks pretty like that," Wayne said to Grace, gesturing to the elaborate braid her long red hair had been done up in with the hand that wasn't holding his coffee - just a donut.

"Thanks!" she replied, pausing from her typing long enough to flash him a bright smile. "It's called a French braid. Jane did it for me."

Wayne stopped short, blinking at her. "Jane, as in our Jane? Patrick Jane? A guy braided your hair?"

"Yeah, and he did a great job!" Grace preened, patting it carefully. "I could never manage it myself, but it's perfect: not too loose and not too tight."

As Kimball walked by, Wayne tapped him on the arm, pointing to have him look at Grace. "Hey Cho, Jane braided her hair for her."

Kimball gave it a brief glance then went ahead and sat at his desk. "Looks like he did a good job."

"Yeah, but he's a guy!" Wayne protested at Kimball's nonchalance.

"What's the matter, Rigsby?" Teresa said behind him, eyeing him when he whipped around to face his unexpected boss. "Are you too sexist to believe a man can't braid hair? Because it's not too far a leap from a woman can't carry a gun."

"No, ma'am," Wayne said, putting his hands up in surrender. "Not saying that at all. You and Van Pelt are more than worthy to be armed and," he swallowed hard, "dangerous."

"Good, now that we've got that straightened out…"' Teresa looked around, frowning at the empty couch where their consultant normally lounged and traded quips with them. "Where's Jane?"

Two rooms over, where families of witnesses waited while their loved ones were being questioned, Patrick sat French braiding the hair of a seven year old girl as the eleven year old brother who was supposed to be watching her stared at a magazine.

"Braiding is really quite simple," he told her, finishing off the braid. "It just takes practice to get it right. Try doing it each night before bed so you don't care how it looks and when you finally get good enough that you like it, you can do it in the morning and wear your hair to school like this."

He tied the braid off with an elastic and pointed her to the reflective glass to check her reflection.

"I like it!" she exclaimed, clearly delighted as she ran her tiny fingers over it in wonder. "It's pretty!"

Teresa watched as Patrick gazed at the little girl, knowing who it was he really saw and knowing where he had to have learned how to braid a girl's hair.
