Ian needed thirty seconds to get high enough to take the shot.
David and Colby were only able to buy him twenty before Calderon opened fire on them.
Ten seconds, a spray of automatic gunfire and David without enough cover.
Colby didn't think, he just leaped - midair when the bullets hit, knocking him back into David.
A single shot from above brought silence.
"Colby! Colby!"
David was screaming at him, grabbing him by the vest.
"I'm okay," Colby muttered, already feeling the ache of new bruises forming under his kevlar.
"What the hell were you thinking?" David shouted, shaking Colby almost violently. "Were you trying to get yourself killed?"
"I thought I was trying to save you," Colby managed.
"You have to stop this, this hero shit!" David yelled in his face. "A split second!" He poked at where the bullets were embedded near his collarbone in the vest. "And these would have been in your neck, not your vest."
"I..." Colby searched, but had nothing to offer. He hadn't thought about risking his life at all. He'd just done it, thinking it had to be done.
David crumbled, letting his head fall on Colby's shoulder. "Three times now." His voice cracked, broken by an aborted sob, and Colby felt the full force of David's grief hit him just as hard as two rounds to the chest had. "You can't keep doing this to me, man. You can't keep almost dying on me. I want my partner back, not a plaque on a god damn wall. So stop it, okay?"
Colby put a hand behind David's neck, tugging him in close, shaken by the realization that he'd almost lost the life he'd fought so hard to get back.
"Okay," he murmured. "I get it now. No more stunts. I promise."
