Another long partial fic finished! This one was started in February of 2006 and I just finished it today. I had really wanted my last published fic of the year to be a partial and not a new one and this had only one scene to go in it, but it's been resisting my efforts for the last two months. But today? Bang. Done. I finally got an angle, which was what I needed. I couldn't pick any one POV for the final scene, so I did all three - focusing on the unique way each of the Eppes men interprets Margaret's music: Don by playing, Charlie with math, Alan by remembering his wife at the piano.

Some of this is based on reality. Esa-Pekka Salonen is the Music Director of the L.A. Philharmonic (who has a beautifully architected new concert hall - breathtaking!). I was around when he first started and now that he's about to step down, I feel a bit wistful about his legacy. The Green Umbrella program is real as well. For anyone in the Southern California area I highly recommend you check it out. The New England Philharmonic is real as well. Lilliana Barutz is not real. At least I don't think there's a pianist named Barutz. (I did start this in 2006, remember?)

One downside to this fic being so old is that I had to rewrite the scene with Alan in the car on the way to the airport. Since this fic began, California passed a law requiring the use of hands-free devices for cell phones in cars. Oops. Now Alan is compliant with the law. Hippie radical that he is, I doubt this is one law he'd find reason to flaunt breaking. ;-)

If anyone wants to hear the music that inspired this fic I *heartily* recommend going to listen to Gorecki's Symphony No. 3. Even if you don't like any sort of classical music? GO LISTEN. The beauty of Dawn Upshaw's voice alone is worth clicking. I saw this performed live and it was transcendent. The composer was in the audience and I can't help but think how euphoric he must have been to hear his work so elegantly and exquisitely performed.

After two plus years I don't remember much about influences other than The Running Man episode itself, but according to what I wrote back then some part of this was inspired by dsudis (I think for her fic called Duet) and pro_f_iler with some beta comments offered by kevlar_fan. All three of those people are no longer involved with the fandom, but thanks go to them regardless even if it is over two years after the fact.

OMG! This is my last published fic of the year! Thank you to everyone who has commented in 2008! You make all this effort worthwhile. :-)

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais
